What Grinds My Gears – Social Media Marketing

My gears are grinding painfully today, because my Facebook account is littered with offers to play Farmville or purchase something on the marketplace.

Facebook users may create a personal profile, add other users as friends and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. Additionally, users may join common interest user groups, organized by workplace, school, or college, or other characteristics.

In short Facebook is amazing, its the next step in technology that make our Communication better, faster and more interesting. I see Facebook as a technological advancement comparable to that of the wheel or electricity.Think about it, Facebook is the closest thing to Telepathy we have achieved.

Facebook however was very quickly realized for its commercial value as explained by my fellow classmate’s(Tiffany) blog. That is the reason my gears are grinding. Something that has the ability to bring so much good to mankind should not be stamped with advertisements and marketing. By pouring million of dollars of advertisements in Facebook, one inherently reduce the benefit it brings to us all.

I wish that we all can communicate better with each other without getting shotgunned in the face with ads.

What Oils My Gears – Humour in Ads

My gears are oily today, because I just spend the last hour snickering and Laughing out Loud by watching different funny commercials.

Like covered in my fellow classmate’s blog (Ashley), some commercials use humor to reach their consumers.

I am happy to see that in attempt to brainwash the consumers, marketers were actually able to create some we would call Art. If the were actually be able to tune the actual message we could enjoy a piece of art. This is also true when it they use advertising in Movies; sure the consumer gets exposed to adds, but in the same way they get to enjoy the beautiful piece of Art the directors made with the Marketers money.

Here are a couple examples of Art created by marketers:

What Grinds My Gears – Lack of Information

My gears are grinding painfully today, the reason for that is I could not find any special Icarus oil that I need.

Today we live , in an Age of Information, where any information can and should be stored online. The idea is that when all the information is publicly displayed for the common benefit of all. Info like what each store has, supplies and inventories of factories and wholesalers, is knowledge that can be used for common benefit.

Marketers know this, they use all this information to deliver their products efficiently, deliver to consumers what they need and when they need it. Which is all great they actually provide a public service.

The reason my gears are grinding is because they guard this info like hell-hounds. Managers and Marketer hold this info as a trade secret, withholding public benefit. Wallmart has done some progress in this by divulging some of their info to their suppliers, but still has a long way to go.

I believe lots of information should be public knowledge where we the people can benefit overall.

What oil’s my Gears – Cool Prezi’s

My gears are functioning very well today. The reason for that is, is that I made a really cool presentation. Unlike the stupid old boring PowerPoint I have found a new way to do graphical presentations as shown on www.prezi.com .

Now think about it, PowerPoint uses pages called “slides”, slides are technology that has been obsolete for 10 years now (when was the last time they used real slides in Sauder?), these days you can only find them in dusty library’s. So if we are no longer restricted to the use of square slides, why should our presentations be square and linear as well?

Check the link above and the video below, then create your own Prezi, and post it as a reply for this post.

What Grinds my Gears – Psychology in Marketing

So my gears are grinding today, the reason for that is, they have been brainwashed by some advertisements that I have seen on the Teli.

So I am learning lots in our Marketing class, and not surprisingly we realize that the a lot of marketing is about psychology. Advertisements consider a lot about human behavior and how to effect it. So let me break down the difference between a marketer and an actual psychologist.

Psycchologist

  • Uses psychology and human behavior sciences in his field.
  • Communicates to a single person at a time
  • Cure different syndromes and personal issues
  • Requires a license

Marketer

  • Uses psychology and human behavior sciences in his field.
  • Communicates to masses of people
  • May cause some shopping related personal problems and syndromes
  • Does not require any license

I suggest that all governments of the world introduce licenses and regulations limiting the actions of Marketers as they have a considerable effect on our behavior and health.
