Songs Unsung: a concert with a twist to it and for a Good Cause

Rumana Monzur had moved here just last year for a 1-year masters in Political Science and upon her visit to her home in Bangladesh for the summer, she was brutally attacked by her husband leaving her visually impaired, harshly impacted and hurt in further physical and emotional ways.  She moved back here, along with her parents and 6-year old daughter just last summer after having UBC, SJC (St. John’s College-grad residency where she lived), iHouse, VGH, among other people/bodies of people, come together and work on getting her back here in hope for good news post further treatment.  Operations have been unsuccessful in terms of regaining even some slight vision back but hopes aren’t down completely as yet.  In order to show continued support, a 3rd year Political Science PhD student, and an SJC alumni came together and planned a concert for her for Feb 9th, with details below, having all donations go to the ‘Rumana Monzur Fund’.

Please join us and spread the word, Rumana and her family will be attending and believe us, she’s a wonderful and inspirational woman to meet!

Songs Unsung – Feb. 9th, 2012

Reception: 6:30 at the GSS Ballroom

Concert: 8:00 at The Roy Barnett Hall (Music Building)

Lungs and Limbs Ensemble, with original compositions from the Composers’ Collective

Admission: $15 or by donation

International Development Week 2012 at the Global Lounge

The Simon K. Y. Lee Global Lounge & Resource Centre is once again recognizing International Development Week (Feb 5-11) by hosting a series of discussions and workshops that critically engages with the theories and practices of international development. We hope to foster dialogue and interest around the themes we’ve chosen this year, so join us at the Global Lounge (2205 Lower Mall, Building 1) for events taking place throughout the week!

So You Want To Save Africa? Mon, Feb 6: 5 – 7 PM

The So You Want To Save Africa? workshop challenges you to critically reflect on your assumptions about Africa with relation to advocacy and development–about what ‘solutions’ are being suggested, by whom, and to what end. Hosted by the G7 Africa-focused groups (AAICAAIRSASTANDWUSCACAC)!

What IS International Development? Tues, Feb 7: 5 – 7 PM

Join Kristi Kenyon, Katherine Muldoon and Dr. Chris Erickson for a critical analysis of the ethics and merits of international development, as they present their opinions and differing perspectives on this highly contested concept.

Right To Develop = Right To Pollute? Wed, Feb 8: 5 – 7 PM

Join Dr. Suzanne Simard, Dr. Benjamin Richardson and Dr. Kathryn Harrison as they discuss their opinions on the controversial question of whether it is fair for developed countries to impose strict environmental regulations on developing countries.
