Effective Group Work

Description:

This learning lab will provide a hands-on opportunity to explore potential strategies for successful group work.  Students will learn new tools for active listening and conflict resolution.  Presented with the Sauder Ambassadors, learn how to be an active leader in setting group norms and exploring how to create a respectful working environment for everyone in the group.

Course-Specific Writing for Upper-Year

Description:

Are you stressed out as the deadline for your paper is approaching? Are you confused about the writing requirements for all of your courses? Discover how to generate, structure and expand thought-provoking academic arguments while improving your syntax, grammar and word selection.  Develop awareness of what constitutes effective academic writing, and evaluate your own work critically and systematically. Presented in collaboration with the Writing Centre and the Go Global Exchange Peer Educators, you will leave the learning lab with a better idea of the various applications of writing strategies.

Friends with Benefits: Support Networks for Academic Success  (CLASS Conference)

Date: October 25, 12:30-1:30pm

Description:

After a month of excitement and exploration in your the new environment, homesickness often starts to set in. But don’t fret; this is quite common among students away from home. In this learning lab, students will be exposed to different strategies for coping with homesickness and tips on managing stress caused by being far away from home. You will also have access to information regarding wellness options at UBC and in your community.

How to Run a Workshop

Date: Wednesday, October 19th,   5:00 to 7:00pm

The Global Lounge is pleased to offer this workshop and we strongly encourage you to attend it if possible as you will learn :

• Who, what, why and where – you, what you want to achieve with your session and who your audience is!
• The nitty gritty – hands-on practical stuff that you’ll be able to apply in your design and delivery.
• Building a great session – how to build a framework and learning outcomes for each section and suggestions and tools on how to have a successful experience from start to finish!
• Choose your own adventure – pick from the skills you want to develop: public speaking, creative ways to lead a discussion and effective debriefing.

This is also great advanced training if you are planning to apply for the Student Leadership Conference coming in January(deadline to apply October 12th by the way!).

The workshop is of course, free and there will be food provided. Please RSVP to global.lounge@ubc.ca by October 14th.

 

 

Negotiating Language Barriers in the Classroom and Beyond (CLASS Conference)

Are you new to the English language? Don’t worry, you are not alone. This interactive workshop will address the needs of both domestic and international students for whom English is a second, third or even fourth language. In particular, the workshop aims to help you overcome language barriers and to develop strategies for successful communication both inside and outside the classroom! You will also learn about key UBC resources that will support you through this transition and the peer supports available to put you on the road to academic success!
