The UBC English Language Institute (UBC-ELI) boasts state-of-the-art facilities, highly qualified instructors, a team of committed administrative staff and a team of enthusiastic Cultural Assistants. The UBC-ELI offers short -term and long-term ESL programs to international and national students on a year-round basis. Cultural Assistants (CAs) act as role models and as ambassadors of UBC and Vancouver to UBC-ELI students. CAs encourage participation in social activities by actively engaging and connecting with students. CAs facilitate communication and interaction among group members, assist students in and out of class, and troubleshoot as necessary. In addition, CAs are responsible for event planning/marketing with guidance from super visors and for ensuring that students have a safe and fun time during their stay.
Pay Rate: $12.95 per hour
Hours per week: 15-30 hours per week (Flexible)

Positions are open for the new Summer Arts Peer Advising program.
Arts Peer Advisors are a dynamic group of student leaders who support the enhanced learning experiences of all students in the Faculty of Arts. The program emphasizes a student-driven, peer advising approach through one-on-one interactions at the Front Desk and through strategic management of online communications. During the summer session, Arts Peer Advisors predominantly enhance the student success for incoming first year students into the Faculty of Arts by offering timely and accurate information. This is a unique opportunity to work with students from diverse cultural backgrounds, to gain meaningful work experience, and be actively involved in a variety of campus activities as a student leader.
There are 7 positions available. These are paid positions through the Work Study and Work Learn Programs. The English Language Institute (ELI) is home to a diverse group of international students from around the world. On Friday March 16th, the UBC-ELI is hosting International Night and we would like you to come out and join us to mix and mingle with other students in our community! I-Night is a great opportunity to meet new friends and to learn from the many cultures that make up UBC and the ELI.
There will be three parts to the evening:
1. International Food Fair and displays.
2. Cultural performances and demonstrations.
3. Party with music and dancing.

The theme of 2012 Reading Week Project is to Celebrate Cultures through Stories, literacy and act by taking a “trip” around the World in Three Days. A team of twenty students from the International Peer Program are privileged to learn alongside children from Kindergarten to Grade 07 as they “travel the world” together on February 21, 23, 24 at Cooke Elementary School. Right after the completion of the projects, participants were invited to write about their experiences during the Reading Week project. Now Let’s hear their stories!
The Simon K.Y. Lee Global Lounge and Resource Centre (GL) located in the Marine Drive residences, is a place for students, faculty, staff and alumni to engage in learning and dialogue about the important global issues of our time. The GL Assistant is a student who has shown a strong ability to lead others and is interested in global issues and community building. The Global Lounge Assistant will act as a Community Animator, someone who can support and connect different people and ideas in order to create opportunities for collaboration and community building.
Within this role, the GL Assistant will lead a committee of student volunteers in order to develop and assist with programming & services for the Global Lounge & Resource Centre. On a day to day basis, the Global Lounge Assistant will staff the welcome desk of the GL and assist the Student Development Officer, Simon K.Y. Lee Global Lounge & Resource Centre, in all aspects of the GL’s day to day operation – this may include developing policies and procedures, maintaining accurate records of inventory and supplies, as well as assisting student groups, university departments and community groups with events. This would include: booking meeting rooms, assisting with set up, service & clean up of events, helping to set up AV equipment.
