International Development Week at the Global Lounge

International Development Week (IDW) is held annually and this year, is taking place from February 7th to February 11th.  IDW highlights the work of Canada’s development community.

The Simon K.Y. Lee Global Lounge & Resource Centre is celebrating IDW by providing an opportunity for UBC students to:

  • increase the awareness of the role many Canadians play in international development;
  • learn more about life in developing countries; and
  • find out how they can become global citizens, actively involved in international development.

Join us at the Global Lounge & Resource Centre (2205 Lower Mall, Building 1) for events taking place throughout the week of February 7th to 11th.

Monday, February 7th:  5pm to 7pm

The Development of International Development

International development is a concept that lacks a universally accepted definition.  Dr. Michael Seear and Dr. Jennifer Chun will lead a discussion about different perspectives on the history of development and issues it faces today.

Tuesday, February 8th:  5pm to 7pm

A Day in the Life of the International Humanitarian

Join us for an open conversation with humanitarians that have worked both internationally and here in Canada.  Our panelists include those who work in the health, engineering, agricultural and business fields.  We will also have panelists currently working in the field chat with us through skype.

Find out what a true day in the life of an international humanitarian is all about and how you can get involved in this type of work.

Thursday, February 10th:  5pm to 7pm

The Impact of Journalism on International Development

Is what you see and read about on the news really the whole story?  Does the media really represent the “community voice”?  Are we really hearing both sides of the story?  Join the Ethics of International Engagement & Service Learning (EIESL), STAND, and the Fiji Awareness Network for a dialogue about how “crisis politics” and “Otherness” is portrayed in the media today.

For more information on these events and the Global Lounge – check out our blog!

IPP @ SLC

Nelson and Cheryl with Jonnie from The Buried Life.

Thanks to everybody who came out for the Student Leadership Conference and to those who attended our workshop “Put Your Thinking Hats On! Improving Intercultural Communication Through Problem Solving”!

There were many great speakers at the SLC who inspired us to rethink things that we often take for granted. What are you rethinking this year? Have you had a “lollipop” moment? What do you want to do before you leave Vancouver?

Your First Reading Week?

In first year, I went to Grandview Elementary and did a fitness/teamwork project in the gym, where we included the school in different activities in the gym to help the students develop teamwork skills.

In second year, I went to Seymour Elementary and did a Japanese Culture Project with grades 3/4 students, where we helped them learn more about Japanese Culture while doing hands-on activities like crafts and calligraphy.

In third year, I went to Queen Alexandra Elementary and did a literacy fair project with the whole school, where UBC students went to different classrooms to do different activities revolving around the literacy theme and later had a literacy fair, where parents and teachers were invited to a showcase of the different literacy projects that were completed.

This year, I am going to be doing “Tech With Trek” at Beaconsfield Elementary.

Why do I keep coming back to do projects every year, you ask? Come find out!

Are you wondering what to do for Reading Week? Join other students on a Reading Week Project and do community service learning in a Vancouver inner city school. Projects take place from Tuesday Feb 15th to Thursday Feb 17th (8:30-3:30pm).

This year, IPP students will be doing the Reading Week Project at Beaconsfield Elementary. The project will involve 220 elementary school children and will involve literacy activities done on computers (aka “Tech With Trek”).

We have limited first-come first-served spots reserved for IPP students, so if you would like to participate in the project, please sign up ASAP and definitely before Nov. 30 so that you will have a spot in the IPP Project!

Sign up online at www.ubc.ca/readingweekprojects.

**IMPORTANT: When you sign up on the website and you are filling out the application form, when you get to
