The Average CEO

Posted by in Uncategorized

Looking at many popular CEO’s, I find it startling that a majority conform to a certain image ideal. People like Steve Jobs, Trevor Burgess, and any female CEO are far from these standards of appearance. They do not conform to the traditional prototype of a white, muscular, tall, deep voiced male in any way, shape, or form. Yet, they have redefined limits and standards of management amongst businesses everywhere. They have become public figures and a model for pushing average standards. However, evidence clearly shows that the leaders dominating the workplace typically share an array of common characteristics and physical traits. This brings up the question of what does society value in regards to leadership figures. Do we want the typical, generic CEO? Or, should we strive for someone unique who offers a new perspective? I think that society needs to reevaluate our perceptions in order to foster innovation and creativity amongst the workplace. As a consumer, we have predisposed ideals of the quintessential leader or employee to which we want to grant our power of purchase. These standards create stereotypes and in turn limit the new and unconventional capable candidates. However, sometimes seeing beyond the normal is what produces the greatest benefits and the most attractive product. In 2014, I think it is time to rethink the standard leader and to create more acceptance and equality amongst all people. In doing such, we allow for a greater spectrum of candidates who may just prove invaluable to their respective business and the global community.
