ITEP Symposium

International Indigenous-Led Teacher Education Program (ITEP) Symposium

13-15 October 2022, First Nations House of Learning (at the First Nations Longhouse), UBC Vancouver Campus

UBC Vancouver is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Musqueam people

On October 13-15, 2022, The Faculty of Education’s Office of Indigenous Education (OIE) at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada will host a three-day international symposium: Indigenous-Led Teacher Education in Local and Global Contexts: Setting Research Priorities and New Directions, at the First Nations House of Learning based in the First Nations Longhouse at UBC’s Vancouver campus, situated on Musqueam territory.

The symposium will bring together 14 Indigenous-led teacher education programs (ITEPs) and other models in teacher education that are supporting Indigenous teacher candidates (ITCs) and Indigenous communities from programs in Canada, the USA, Australia, and Norway. Indigenous teachers play a significant role in creating environments that are culturally responsive, empowering, inclusive of Indigenous knowledges, and promote decolonization and educational sovereignty in classrooms and communities.

This symposium is intended to:
1) identify key insights and knowledge gaps concerned with developing, implementing, and measuring success and community-defined impact of ITEPs;
2) identify research themes relevant to the study, theory, and practice of ITE from global/local contexts;
3) share strategies, challenges, and successes occurring in programs (e.g., curriculum, program development, partnerships, recruitment/retention); and
4) build an international network of scholars, teacher educators, and community members engaged in this critical area of development and who are innovating through a range of program models and lines of inquiry.

Over the 3 days, discussion circles and presentations will be organized around the themes of:

Celebrating and Uplifting ITEPs: Programs, Practices, & Partnerships
Generating New Knowledge: Developing New Theories for ITEPs
Moving Forward: Building an International Network of ITEPs

We will have both opening and closing keynote addresses, as well as touchstones with Elders, students, policy makers, teacher educators, government and NGOs, as well as others concerned with the significant priority of preparing Indigenous teachers for urban, rural, and reserve-community contexts. We will conclude the afternoon of Saturday October 15 so that people may begin their return travel.

Elements of the symposium will be photographed and video recorded. The images and recordings may be included in printed/online publications (including but not limited to the symposium report) and may be displayed on UBC’s website as well as other online spaces and social media sites (including but not limited to NITEP’s Flickr photostream).
