The topic on social entrepreneurship covered in lecture was a new and interesting concept to me. It was surprising to learn that the popular shoe brand TOMS, is an example of a social entrepreneurial company.
Founded by an inspired businessmen who wanted to give back to society, Blake Mycoskie created the shoe brand, TOMS. For every one pair of TOMS sold, Blake would provide a new pair to children in poor countries such as South America. TOMS giving partners include the NGOs, charities, and other non-profit organizations that guide TOMS to give new shoes responsibly and in a sustainable manner. Aside from its compassionate commitments, TOMS shoes offer a wide variety of style for women and men.
Its success as a social entrepreneurial business is not only its generous giving to the children in need, but also the shoe’s own unique style and comfortable fit. TOMS has also allowed young people to get involved in the community through fundraising events such as the “One Day Without Shoes” event to raise awareness of children growing up with no shoes. As such a successful social entrepreneur, Blake has give its 1 millionth pair of shoes to children in need in 2010.
