Unit 2 Reflection: LinkedIn and Formal Report Proposal
Another unit has come to a close in English 301, so it’s time for another unit reflection! This time around I would like to talk about my LinkedIn profile, the formal report proposal and outline, the peer review, and more on the peer review process.
I had already had a LinkedIn profile before starting this course, so for that assignment I mainly was just editing and updating what was on my profile, such as my work experience, my summary, some of my skills, and things of that nature. I hadn’t actually been on my LinkedIn profile for a few weeks so it was nice to update everything on it and add new material. I feel that LinkedIn can be a really useful tool for your career and professional image, especially if you build up your connections and skills. I enjoyed updating it and I enjoy using my profile as a means to network with people in industries that I’m interested in.
As for putting together my formal report proposal and outline, I found that deciding on a topic that would be of interest to me was fairly difficult. I knew that I wanted to do a topic that related to chemistry, but I couldn’t do it on my recent work experience because that was during co-op and my work there is of course confidential. Thinking of the idea of latex gloves actually stemmed from one of my previous co-op jobs where we used a lot of latex gloves, and I realized that that could be a big source of plastic waste at UBC. The outline was easier once I had an idea about where I wanted to go with the formal report, and the example in the textbook helped a lot with deciding on how I’d want to structure my report. For the progress, I am a bit worried about interviews for next week, it may be difficult to schedule them in with faculty and get meaningful answers from them. The survey may be a bit easier if I do it through Facebook though. I am also a bit worried about how this will all come together, but I have an idea of how I want my document to look, so I’m optimistic about it.
For the peer review for the formal report proposal, I learned that I really try to give helpful feedback when going through someone’s work. I want my group members to succeed in this course as much as I do so I really want to make sure that suggestions I give are meaningful. I’m actually surprised that I go through people’s work more thoroughly than I proofread through my own work. Reviewing work actually brings out my attention to detail, so I need to apply that to when I’m writing my own documents and emails.
As for the peer review process, I haven’t learned much else than what I have learned about my group members from the previous unit. I still seem to have a bit of trouble with run-on sentences, and my group members are all very good at professional correspondence and peer review, and give excellent feedback. My colleagues have interesting and helpful ideas and advice from review and for their formal reports. This process has definitely improved my writing skills and proofreading though. I have avoided run-on sentences more so than last time with just a couple hiccups, and I have eliminated grammatical errors entirely. However, what I need to focus a bit more on now is my sentence structure and avoiding awkward phrases, which seemed to have come up for a couple assignments. Peer review has definitely shown me that writing can be difficult and that it’s valuable to have someone go through your work.
Below is my revised formal report proposal and a link to the peer review of my assignment. Looking forward to the next unit!
