Official Member of [Insert Club Name Here]

Currently: Uploading some most Lost Episodes onto my USB Drive so I can watch some more.

This past half week has been dedicated to Clubs. Clubs everywhere, handing out pieces of paper, majority of which, get thrown in the garbage / recycling bins. I was surprised to see the vast array of different clubs that UBC has to offer. I knew there were a lot of clubs coming into UBC, but some of them are pretty ridiculous. For example, there is a Club that is entirely about sending in secrets about yourself, and they turn them into Post Cards. It was pretty interesting. I’m sure all you UBC Students out there joined some clubs. It will make UBC Life a lot more enjoyable. I myself, joined two clubs… Kababayan (Filipino Student Association) and Pre-Med Society. I’m excited to see what these two clubs have in store for me, and I’ll try my best to be an active member of both of them.

For those of you people who are in later stages of life at UBC, make sure you hit me up with a comment as to which clubs I should join, either this year or next year!

Now, as to what to expect for the upcoming week. Midterms await me at the end of next week.
Thursday – Chemistry 121 Midterm
Friday – English 110 In-Class Essay
I am REALLY not looking forward to that In-Class Essay of mine. I am a terrible Essay writer, which may seem ironic due to the fact that I am a blogger. When it comes to writing things that I enjoy writing about, I feel like I’m decent. But when it comes to writing about a topic given to me, I fail horribly. Chemistry Midterm shouldn’t be that bad, I feel pretty confident in Chemistry right now. Probably thanks to the fact that I’ve been studying non-stop (which gives reason for the lack of posts) for the past week or so.

But in the midst of all these Midterms, the first of many Concerts/Raves I’ll be attending starts on Friday, October 2nd. Deadmau5 is coming to perform at the UBC Thunderbird Arena. For those of you who don’t know who Deadmau5 is (I’m assuming many of you don’t). He is a Canadian DJ from Toronto, who redefines the way DJs perform live today. Unlike your traditional Turntable and Mixer DJ, he uses a completely different set up. He literally manipulates the song on the fly to create a whole new performance. No two performances ever have the same track played, their always manipulated in some way, shape, or form. Deadmau5 has won Juno Awards for his music and has even gone to be Grammy Nominated. He is amazing to watch perform, and best of all, he wears a Mouse Head while he does it.

Which leads me to my next point, the Beats Per Minute Song of the Week, Coming from the one and only Deadmau5. This week’s song is “The Reward is Cheese – Deadmau5” and is one of his more famous songs. I decided to post a video of him performing live at a concert in San Francisco, if you like the song (it’ll be in bad quality, so take that into account) you can check the link underneath the video. ENJOY AND HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND EVERYONE!

The Reward is Cheese – Deadmau5

(Note: If you like this song, check out the Remix “The Reward is More Cheese – Deadmau5” for an even better track!)

Latrodectus Hesperu

More commonly known as the Black Widow Spider. Today was supposed to be a normal day at work, nothing out of the ordinary. It’s a Thursday, meaning that theres no Produce Trucks coming in, there’s no freight, there’s nothing to do but make my Produce Department look perfect. But today was one of those days that I will take awhile to get over, because today was a very scary day.

This morning, me and my buddy at work were contemplating on how big and juicy our Green Grapes looked. We even were so bold, to buy a big bag of them. We ate these grapes on our break, and loved them. They were delicious, juicy, and round. So after our breaks, we went about our day, not expecting anything un-ordinary to happen. Around 12:00pm, our store gets a phone call from a customer who also purchased these delicious grapes. Her panicked voice on the phone indicated something was wrong, but I was expecting something like “You’re store service is terrible!” or “Can I speak to a Manager? I have a complaint.” But to my surprise this customer said “So, I just bought some Grapes from your store… and there happens to be a BLACK WIDOW in them.” At first, me and my buddy thought that this girl was playing a practical joke on us, and we didn’t believe it. She continued to reassure us that there was a living black widow spider crawling around in the Grapes. For those of you who aren’t very knowledgeable about spiders (I wasn’t until today) a Black Widow Spider is a very small but poisonous spider. It has a venom in it that is affects your nervous system and causes intense pain. These spiders aren’t deadly to a healthy adult, but to an elder or a child, this spider can kill.  So, my buddy decides to go to this Customers house, and pick it up. (In a container, of course) To our disbelief, this little black widow existed. It had spun a web inside the black grapes and was just chillin’ there. We poked holes in a plastic deli container and watched it, examined it, googled it, and tried to identify which kind it was. We confirmed it truly was a Black Widow Spider, and that the venom is 15 times poisonous as a Prairie Rattlesnake. (Actual fact, google it) We attempted to catch it some flies, because we really wanted to see it devour something whole. But we ended up just giving up and go back and work.

Black Widow Spider on News

That’s a link to a News Report of the same thing happening in Alberta. The Green Grapes came from California, just like the Grapes mentioned in the News Report.  I warn all of you Grocery Shoppers out there, becareful as to where your Produce comes from!! (Avoid Grapes from California)

Here’s a picture of the bad boy (Sorry for the Bad Quality, I used a zoom feature on an Application on my iPhone, not the best idea)

Not the Good Kind of Shopping

Currently: Sitting in my Uncle’s Basement Suite (Where I am going to be living during my UBC Years) and listening to “21 Guns – Greenday”.

We all dread those summer times when those frightening commercials air on TV. Old Navy’s Back to School Clothing, Staple’s Back to School Supplies, and Best Buy’s Back to School Laptops. Those commercials just lay the foundation for the harsh reality of going back to School. (Or in my case, “Starting School”) Looking back at this summer, it has to of been one of the most expensive summers of my life. But finally, I am completely finished the “Back to School” Shopping. Here’s a very simple Doughnut Chart that I constructed using Excel to show how much I’ve spent JUST on school supplies / textbooks.

Now, let’s anaylze each of these money “suckers”.

UBC “Fan” Gear:
I thought that since I am proud to be attending UBC, that I should show it off. I already have a UBC hoodie with my nickname “Jords” (From my Chemistry Teacher) on the Hood. Now it’s time to take it to the next level. It was actually just today that I bought the Black UBC Clipboard x 2($6.50), a Blue UBC Water Bottle ($15.95), and a UBC Thunderbird’s Lanyard ($9.95). I’m ready to show off my UBC Pride.

Electronics:
Some of you MAY disagree that an iPod Classic 120GB is considered under the “School Supplies” Category, but I beg to differ. I am one of those workers who works best with my some bumpin’ tunes in the background. Therefore, if I have some tunes to listen to while I work coming from my iPod, then I work harder, and I get better grades, and life is great.

School Supplies:
I was originally planning to use my Gr. 12 Binders for school this year. (I like to be organized so I have a Binder for EVERY class) BUT, today while I was browsing through Staples, I came across a sale that I couldn’t resist. I bought those 1 inch “Durable” Binders that a lot of my friends used last year. I also bought the usual Red/Black/Blue Pens, 0.5mm Lead Pencil, Erasers, 0.5mm Lead, Highlighters, White Out, Small Clear Plastic Rulers, and Lined Paper. (SPEAKING of Lined Paper, if any of you people need some, The Staples on Campus by the McDonalds has 150 Sheets for $0.24!!!! When you walk in, look to your left/right I can’t remember exactly but their right by the entrance.)

Textbooks:
Here’s the big one. I bought all my books Brand New, just because I like new shiny things that come in clear plastic. The first day I went, I managed to get all my Books (Including Optional Stuff) except for ONE book. (The Integrated Resource Package for Chem 121). That was fixed today, for the Discount Book Store on top of the McDonalds on Campus has it! So for all you people waiting til Sept. 2nd to go back to get it at the bookstore, FRET NOT, go to the Discount Book Store and pick it up.

Here is the finished product (Note: My Integrated Resource Chem Book isn’t a part of this due to the fact that it is being held for me at the Discount Book Store)

For all you people that have finished your Back to School Shopping, Comment on your experiences! For those of you who still have some to do, HAPPY SHOPPING!
