LinkedIn profile:
Prior to our English 301 class I already had a LinkedIn account set up. However, going through the LinkedIn best practices assignment and our class requirements I noticed that my profile had a lot of room for improvement. After making the suggested changes I have noticed that my profile is more complete and concise. The number of visits in my profile have also doubled since the new changes were made. I also realized how important small details about yourself affect the overall impression of your profile. I am glad that I had the opportunity to learn these skills and implement them in my own social media context. This was extremely important due to the fact that I am actively looking for post graduate jobs.
Report Proposal and Outline
Brainstorming for my report proposal was tough. I had an original idea in mind that was not concise and clear enough. After changing to a current project that I was involved I noticed how satisfying it can be to write a report in something you are involved. Creating an outline however was really challenging. I had no idea of what to write and how to structure my paper. By forcing myself into this situation I learned that brainstorming and organization are vital for any successful structured paper. I still feel my outline is not complete and needs work, but it already gave me a direction on what to survey and write.
Peer Review of Proposal
I reviewed John Michael Doyle-Waters’s proposal, which made me analyze common mistakes students make when writing proposals. I noticed a lot of repetition on his paper and when I looked back at mine, I had the same problem. I also learned that sometimes we overestimate the capacity of our proposals and how efficient they can be. We must act on them slowly as change comes through time and not directly.
Peer Review Process
I really enjoy the peer review process. It helps me identify common mistakes that are made by everyone and correct them. By looking over someone’s paper I am also practicing for when I look over my own work, which enables you to diversify your ideas and implement new techniques. Listening to what my peers have to say about my paper is also interesting as you receive an outsider point of view in your writing topic. As we are all writing similar papers having that opinion from someone with similar experience as you really help enhance our writing skills. I was not surprised by what I read from my colleague’s work, as all of us don’t have experience in writing proposals or with LinkedIn profiles. I believe everyone is trying their best to be effective and transparent. Peer reviewing has definitely had a positive impact in my writing as I know I can count on positive feedback from my peers which not only enhances my final paper but it enhances my individual skills for future assignments.
