Final Project: Liquefaction Danger Zones in Greater Vancouver

Posted by in GEOB 270

Personal Experience: For our final project, my team and I wanted to explore the earthquake danger zones in the Greater Vancouver area, and which healthcare facilities would be at the highest risk to liquefaction due to a high magnitude earthquake. Our goal was to create a map that showed the risk level of each healthcare facility and the nearest hospital to that healthcare facility and the danger zones to transport patients and injured civilians. My team and I worked on the creation of the map together. We met on countless…read more

Lab 5: Planning a Ski Resort: Environment Impact Assessment

Posted by in GEOB 270

Environmental Assessment of a Ski Resort of Brohm Ridge: Lab5part2.4 Memo: The proposal of having a ski resort built on the Brohm Ridge is environmentally threatening, especially to the ecosystems that are currently residing in the area. Through the examination of the Environmental Assessment’s recommendation and Whistler’s criticism, I have conjured a couple of maps and a list of evidence for why the resort should not be built. Through clipping each layer to the project boundary area, I was able to crop each layer to fit within the project boundary….read more

Lab 4: Housing Affordability

Posted by in GEOB 270

Data Class Map: Lab4dataclass Different methods of data classification affect the different interpretations of data on maps. For example, if I were a journalist, I would use natural breaks, because it gives a more realistic depiction of housing costs, and takes in the distribution of the data; showing the price differences between each area. However, if I were a real estate agent, I would use equal interval to make the area near UBC to appear cheaper and more affordable than what it actually is in order to draw in buyers….read more

Lab 3: Planning for a Tsunami/ Storm Surge

Posted by in GEOB 270

1. List the healthcare and educational facilities within the Vancouver danger zone, if any, and explain how you came up with your answer. There weren’t any educational or healthcare facilities that fell within the danger zones. I came up with this answer by creating a layer using the intersect tool. My input layers were the danger zone and health care and education facilities. The two layers combined to create a layer of only the parts that intersected, resulting in an attribute table of the healthcare and educational facilities that intersect…read more

Lab 2: Coordinate Systems and Spatial Data Models

Posted by in Courses, GEOB 270

1. Review your answers to question 2 and 5 to answer the following: for general audience, describe how to fix misaligned and improperly referenced spatial data, including taking into consideration project properties. One can review the projection and coordinate system of their layers by going through the properties of the layer. After accessing the properties, one should locate the data source tab. From here, the mapper will be able to view the coordinate and datum system of the layer. To fixed misaligned data. The mapper would have go through each…read more
