Employment History

Geologic Field Assistant (Summer 2018): I was employed by Ehsan Salmabadi, a professional geologist, and current MSc Student working on a structural geology masters at U.B.C. His work took us to the Mackenzie Mountain Range in the N.W.T. near the Cantung Mine. Here we spent a month working in and around the mine, primarily to map structural features found in the region. Some time was spent staying at the mine, but most of the time we worked out of remote two-man camps, that we either had to hike into or were dropped off by helicopter.

Self-Employed (2013-2018): The majority of work I have ever done was while self-employed.  Most commonly I have worked as a laborer on a wide variety of job sites.

Carpentry & Construction: I have worked as a carpentry assistant with John Hicks, and many others on Salt Spring Island. I assisted in the construction of houses & garages from foundation construction, framing, roofing, & finishing of these structures.  Additionally, I have worked as a stonemason assistant in building retaining walls and re-finishing pathways.

Property Maintenance & Landscaping: I had been contracted & employed to caretake and maintain private properties and farmland.  This including mowing lawns, gardening, tending to animals & any other physical labor that is needed on a farm.

Full Scale Excavating (off & on): My father owns an excavating business and throughout the years I have joined him and worked on a variety of jobs using a number of different machines. I have used excavation machines to work on a lot of projects, including landscaping, digging foundations for houses, and installing septic fields. Because of this I have lots of experience and feel comfortable working with heavy machinery.

Maple Leaf Helicopters (Summer 2016): I was contracted to be in charge of social media and help with marketing communications. My duties including creating, updating, and expanding a company database of customers. They also include the creation and temporary management of social media for the company.

Coursework

Introduction to & Advanced Mineral Deposits (EOSC 331 & 424)

These courses involved a lot of lab work with extensive activities identifying minerals in hand specimens and with both reflected light & transmitted light microscopy. An overview of mineral deposit types was learned in the introductory course and a more in-depth understanding of formation & exploration was covered in the advanced course.

Completed in-depth projects on the epithermal Ladolam Gold Mine, Lihir, Papua New Guinea, and planning a field exploration season in the Redstone Copper Belt in the Mackenzie Mountains, NWT, Canada.

Introduction to & Advanced Structural Geology (EOSC 323 & 422)

These courses covered all types of natural deformation in the crust of the Earth. Along with the theoretical side there was a lot of lab time focused on geologic map interpretation & activities involving structurally controlled mineral deposits.

Igneous, Metamorphic & Sedimentary Petrology (EOSC 321, 322, & 320)

These courses support an understanding of all Earth process that exist in the rock cycle. Included with these courses were extensive labs with both hand sample identification and identification using transmitted light microscopy.

Field Techniques (EOSC 223) & Field Geology (EOSC 328)

223 was an introduction to geology in the field, which included a few day trips to outcrop map & a one-week field school, with a focus on geologic structures & mapping. Similarly, 328 was a three-week field geology course with a focus on outcrop mapping & larger-scale tectonic interpretation.
