CUEBC Pro-D Thoughts

Yesterday I attended a conference held by the Computer Using Educators of BC about integrating technology and using it effectively in the classroom. Overall it was a good experience, and I gained some insight about how many of my teachers spend their professional development days. For my own reference, I’ll just briefly note some of the things I observed and learned from the conference:

Keynote Speaker: He talked about the current state of technology usage in the classrooms and the drastic change that has taken place over the last decade both in terms of usage and attitudes towards such technology. Some things I found that were useful/informative were:
~In watching the video about how one teacher connected with her class on a deeper level by surveying them on google forms, I found exactly what was needed to fill the gap in my introductory activity for next week. (So excited!!)
~He emphasized the power of blogs–when done right, and not made a chore
~Rules regarding technology in school have changed drastically from when I was in high school
~The poor tech guy who was recording the session had a tough time.

Session 1: Coding with Swift Playgrounds
~There are so many new and free game-type aps to teach the basics of coding now… Swift Playgrounds is definitely one that I would like to invest in

Session 2: Gamifying Your Course
~It’s easy to turn classroom lessons into games
~Using action buttons in Powerpoint is a simple tool
~Storyline 2 is a resource I could investigate
~A good game has 4 components: It’s an artificial experience, voluntary participation, defined rules and a clear objective

Session 3: Making with Minecraft
~Minecraft is a valuable resource for a host of different projects
~Some of the best learning takes place at the intersection of mathematical thinking (algebra, trig, calculus) and computational thinking (gaming, simulation, robotics)
~Great ideas for how to tie Minecraft into mathematics, social studies, physics, current events, financial literacy/resource management

All in all, I feel like attending this conference just reminded me about how much new technology and how many new resources are out there, waiting to be used effectively in classrooms. People keep telling me not to “reinvent the wheel” when teaching, but I can’t see how I can not reinvent the wheel, since lesson plans that incorporate the latest technology and programs and allow for optimal learning don’t currently exist. I guess it’s all a matter of finding that happy medium between pursuing innovative new ideas, but not over-stressing about everything.
