I chose this article because we’ve been discussing Tesla a lot in class, and Elon Musk seems to be a hot topic. I was aware that he is the co-founder of several companies besides Tesla Motors, but I was surprised to find that one of his companies, SpaceX Designs, is focused on manufacturing various rockets and spacecrafts. The company states that it has the “ultimate goal of enabling people to live on other planets”.

I was drawn to this article because it talks about the possibility that a lot of businesses will want to utilize the frontier of space. SpaceX believes that their lower cost will enable more companies to launch their businesses into space, thus making space more accessible to people. I’ve always wanted to go into space, so I was pretty excited to read that. I didn’t realize that technology had advanced this far already… Companies are emerging in this new space market ready to “tackle the commercialization of space”, and there are endless possibilities in this new frontier.

Last year, I took a class that focused on race and gender equality. This editorial news article, from The New York Times, takes a closer look at the distribution of gender of Twitter’s board members. The gender distribution of Twitter’s user base in 2013 was approximately 53% female and 47% male, so it was strange to find that there were no women board members. I believe that having women on the board would be extremely helpful in Twitter’s case, as adding women would not only improve the company’s image, it would also give some insight on the majority of the social networking site’s users. The article The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase Profits, suggests that there are often many downsides that come along with exercising “social responsibility”, and that there is no place for it in business, unless it has to do with increasing profits. I would disagree with this point in Twitter’s case, as I feel that being gender inclusive is a “social responsibility”, and that Twitter should reconsider their diversity.

The article goes on to talk abut the lack of women in the technology industry as a whole. I took special interest into this part of the article, as I plan to study Commerce and Computer Science. I hope that the outlook on women in the technology industry and business workforce will improve for the sake of gender equality, and “social responsibility”.
