Week 1

Mar. 27 – Mar. 31

  1. MON: Mathematics: Name Lengths
    • (W1) – Math Measurement; lesson 1 in unit plan
    • Reflection & Ways to Improve:
      • Have students review steps to complete on worksheet
      • Have something to keep the audience busy while students are coloring in their block on the graph (maybe provide them with a material to show the number of letters in the name ie. unifix cubes, placing the corresponding number together to match the name)
      • Provide sheets with the names written on them so students can reference them; add other names to help those with the longest and shortest names
      • Have pictures on the worksheets alongside the words
    • Nature School: Searching for Signs of Spring and Exploring Nature
  2. TUES: English Language Arts: Book of Letters Oo
    • Oo Book of Letters
    • Reflection & Ways to Improve:
      • Stop and restart the song if students aren’t singing properly
      • Remind students that Oo is a vowel not a consonant and to sing accordingly
  3. WED: Cross-Curricular Whole Class Activity: Building a Structure Togeher
    • (W1) Building Blocks Whole Class Exercise
    • Reflection & Ways to Improve:
      • Having two circles would work better for those students having a hard time waiting
      • Providing them the blocks in advance could have move it along quicker but students may fiddle with the blocks while waiting
      • Give students a time limit to place their block (possibly hit a chime and when the sound stops they have to be finished)
      • Taking a survey was an effective way to get the students engage (had them vote it they wanted to build a house or tower)
  4. THURS:Mathematics: Measuring Lengths
    • (W1) – Math Measurement; lesson 2 in unit plan
    • (W1) – Math Measurement; NEWlesson 2 in unit plan
    • There are two lesson plans for this math lesson because I changed my plan after Monday’s measurement lesson. I quickly learned that the lesson was two easy for the students and would be more personalized if I included more materials.
    • Reflection & Ways to Improve:
      • Remember to explain what the ‘________’ is for on the worksheet (thankfully a student asked)
      • More stations would be fine – they really enjoyed it
      • Maybe test the big block in advance as many struggled with recording the answer because it didn’t fit properly OR introduce the concept of a half
      • Some measured the perimeter over the length – either better explain the length or this could be an indicator of that the activity was too easy for them
      • I could have created a backside of the worksheet with short items to emphasize both types of length
  5. FRI: English Language Arts: Writing Book – Kindergarten Inquiry into Teachers
    • (W1) Writing Book Lesson
    • Reflection & Ways to Improve
      • The book wasn’t the biggest hit; students had a hard time moving to things teachers do best away from what teachers can’t do
      • I ended up not providing the writing prompt as the audience became restless
      • I would say only about 30%-40% wrote something about what they liked about their teachers/what best teachers should do
    • Nature School: Exploring the Elements, Testing Balance, Investigating a Nature Seesaw
