Week Two

While reading The Voyage of Christopher Columbus: Columbus’s own journal of Discovery Newly Restored and Translated, something that stuck out to me was when Columbus and his men first arrive, their interaction with the natives is pleasant and friendly, yet the first thing on his mind is  how “They must be good servants, and intelligent, for I can see that they quickly repeat everything said to them. I believe they would readily become Christians;” (94). He describes how they welcome them onto their island and even offers them objects of value (presumably) from their culture, and he sees this as a submissive behavior, making him believe that they’d be willing to convert and serve. Another thing that stuck out to me was how he wrote them off as poor because they didn’t have the same things as he did such as weapons, and wore little clothing. I think this raises the question, can you comment on a culture you know nothing about?
