NGOs and Civil Society

Lebanon’s NGO sector is dynamic and the weakness of public service delivery lends a space for NGOs to be extremely active in all domains of public life (AbouAssi, 2015, in Abouassi and Trent 2016, 286). Lebanese NGOs are distinctive in their ability to “secure funding from various sources with less interference from the central government than other countries in the Middle East and North Africa” (Abouassi and Trent 2016, 286). The government and legislatives provide a lack of barriers to conduct activities further facilitating NGO activity. The major sources of funding for Lebanese NGOs are “membership fees and international donors, especially in light of a shared perception among NGOs that donors prefer working with them over the government” (AbouAssi, 2013, in Abouassi and Trent 2016, 286).
