Nutrition demonstrations are held at the Richmond Foodbank every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month during their grocery distribution hours.
Program Goals: 1. Use a nutrition demonstrations to increase number of conversations around food and nutrition knowledge and cooking skills 2. To increase knowledge and awareness of how to use foods they receive from the foodbank in various ways(recipes) Vision: The nutrition demos help to engage foodbank customers in talking about food & nutrition, cooking skills, and food items given at the foodbank that week. It is another strategy used to provide a sense of community and belonging.
Duties to be performed: – Set up cooking area for nutrition demo: hotplate/electric skillet/bowls/serving dishes, etc. nice tablecloth, decorations, show the ingredients used in the recipe, etc. – Look at the food items being provided to the foodbank customers that day and determine an easy recipe to use – Prepare the recipe and continue to make the food throughout the foodbank distribution open hours – Engage with foodbank customers during preparation and nutrition demos – Provide samples of the recipe to foodbank customers – Inform customers of health and nutrition benefits, food or cooking skills
Skills required: – Basic cooking skills – Works independently and collaboratively with other staff and volunteers – Quick on their feet in determining recipes – Able to follow simple recipes – Great people skills and ability to engage different personalities – Computer skills to research evidence-based health and nutrition benefits if needed – Have an interest in food and nutrition – Approachable and can provide resources for further food and nutrition services
VISION: Two volunteers for nutrition demonstrations at Richmond Foodbank. Shift is scheduled 9:30-1:30 pm on 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month. Grocery distribution time: 11-1 pm on Wednesdays. Volunteers come in at 10 am and look at the food items that will be given out to the foodbank customers. Prepare the area for presentable nutrition demos. Start cooking just before grocery distribution opens and continue doing the demos until distribution ends. Engage with foodbank customers throughout the distribution time with food & nutrition information, cooking skills, and recipe used. Clean up. The Public Health Dietitian will be attending on a regular basis in the beginning and afterwards will only come on the first Wednesday of the month.
