Two MSc or PhD positions on: 1) utilization of probiotics to lower the incidence rate of uterine infections and improve production performance of transition dairy cows and 2) development of a novel preventative treatment for mastitis in dairy cows are available in Dr. Burim N. Ametaj’s laboratory at the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada. The research will be conducted at University of Alberta dairy farm and several dairy farms in Alberta (less than 1 h drive from university campus) and requires visits to dairy farms to collect samples and records related to reproduction and milk production. The incumbents also will take part in lab analyses and writing research papers, and presenting them to national or international scientific conferences. Research work is conducted in collaboration with Dr. Michael Gaenzle (Professor of Microbiology at the same department). The labs are equipped with state of the art equipment for all the required analyses. Edmonton is a comfortable city (population ~ 1 million) with a reasonable cost of living. The successful PDF candidate will be expected to have a bachelor degree in animal or veterinary science.

Salary: The salaries of MSc and PhD students are in accordance with University of Alberta regulations. For more information, contact Dr. Ametaj. The positions are available immediately and the appointment is for 2-4 years. Driving to the dairy farms in the experiment with a rented car is required for the reproduction project.
