SCWIST’s Make Possible Mentoring Workshop – Nov 25, 2015

BROWN BAG SERIES:  Make Possible Mentoring Workshop

12:15 to 1:45 pm on November 25, 2015 @ SPPH Room B104

The Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology (SCWIST) has launched its Make Possible Mentoring Network, as part of the Government of Canada’s Status of Women Initiative to advance women.  Make Possible Project Manager, Cheryl Kristiansen, will demonstrate how you can connect, collaborate and lead through its dedicated mentoring network in STEM (www.makepossible.ca).  Participant will learn how to find a mentor, be a mentor, develop skills, share experiences and create leadership opportunities.

Gwen Gnazdowsky from One Conversation will facilitate hands-on exercises to empower women through mentorship and develop skills to create successful mentoring relationships. Interactive group discussion will create a supportive learning environment and networking exercises will help build a collaborative community.  Participants will learn how to market themselves in 30 seconds and how to make an effective request.

Make Possible Project Partner D-Wave Systems is a global leader in quantum computing solutions and supports mentoring to advance women in STEM.  Learn more about exciting opportunities at D-Wave.

Background of Presenters:

Cheryl Kristiansen from SCWIST brings diverse expertise in project management, engineering innovation and leading transformative change in STEM.  She has a degree in Mechanical Engineering, hands-on engineering experience in the alternate fuels technology sector and senior leadership experience in the oil and gas sector.  As Managing Director of the Mitchell Odyssey Foundation, Cheryl developed an effective network of Odyssey supported schools across BC with innovative programs that motivate and inspire high school students to pursue careers in STEM.   The Make Possible Program is well aligned with SCWIST goals to empower women and girls in science, engineering and technology.

Gwen Gnazdowsky of ONE Conversation Coaching & Facilitation has been helping people achieve personal, professional and relationship goals for over 25 years – One Conversation at a Time!  She is the National Mentorship Program Developer and Coordinator with the Women in Leadership Foundation.  Gwen recently delivered a Ted Talk on “Happiness is a Paradigm Shift” for TEDxBCIT and an Assertiveness Workshop for BCIT Nurses.  She teaches Communication and Public Speaking Courses at Langara College and Vancouver School Board.  Gwen has delivered keynotes and workshops for YWCA’s Mentoring Programs, UBC Anthropology Students, SCWIST, Human Resources Management Association, to name a few.  Gwen is committed to helping people achieve what they want in life. www.oneconversation.com

Microtopia Documentary Screening – Dec 1, 2015

This event is an one hour long documentary directed by Jesper Wachtmeister that explores the intriguing concept of micro dwellings that has sprouted and spread root in our society today. Afterwards, attendants are invited to stay for a discussion session with three expert panelists regarding both local and global perspectives on micro dwellings.

Frulact Opportunity

Frulact would like to get into the university network in Canada which are working on food tech/science research areas. Frulact will open an industrial unit in Kingston – construction under way, dec 2016 / jan. 2017 first local production. If they like the profile of the student, after completing his/her studies, further training will be given at Frulact Portugal with view to an offer opportunity at our Canadian plant. It is normal procedure for us to have the students sign a confidentiality agreement

Regarding the student profile:

o   ideally a final year student from related subjects such as chemical engineering, food engineering or equivalent.

o   Laboratory experience valued: sensory testing, microbiology, FQ analyses, and so on. Ability to plan, execute and provide reports on laboratory work. Interest in the food industry and interest in Innovation.

o   Proactive, good team player, available for travelling, great communication skills and interest in working for an international and fast growing company such as Frulact.

o   English and French languages necessary, ability to speak/understand Portuguese will be a major plus.

Everything we eat tells a story. While cooking a traditional Filipino dish in real time, writer/performer Jovanni Sy (Artistic Director of Richmond’s Gateway Theatre) takes us on an entertaining and thought-provoking trip through history as he weaves stories of conquest, imperialistic desires, and colonialism through the construction (and deconstruction) of the Rellenong Bangus. Audiences will immerse themselves in the tantalizing aromas of a kitchen, and a tasting plate is served at the conclusion of the piece. A Taste of Empire is truly a feast for the mind and the palate.
