What will it be.. Tree-Cutter or Tree-Hugger?

Protecting our precious rain forests is a huge task, but needs to be a priority. Mankind needs to move faster to protect the lungs of our earth!  This can be done, and progress is being shown in a few different areas. The UN has been taking a firmer stance on this issue by allowing sections to re-grow, but this process is not yet isolated. Also, one of the main international efforts called REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degeneration) is taking action by paying the people who cut down the trees in South America to not cut down trees. I question if this short term incentive will actually work in the long run. Economic growth both causes deforestation and slows it. As more emerging countries become more prosperous, their needs and wants become greater, but at the same time, they are becoming more educated about their surroundings and more aware of certain issues. The air we breathe is important, but so are the many different diverse animals and plants that are found in these forests and no where else on earth! We have learned so much from them and they carry so much more information that we humans, have yet to discover.

Canadian’s Cannot Name Pets as Beneficiaries in a Will..for Good Reason

by liannemcradu ~ September 21st, 2010

After reading this article by The Province, I was shocked by reading that someone would leave a will to their dog as large as $12 billion dollars U.S!!!! A judge later reviewed this and left a $2 billion dollar reward for the dog instead. Apparently is is normal in the U.S. that owners leave money in a fund for their pet. The United States is the only country in the world where this is allowed, and fortunately it has not been allowed in Canada! I find this an unreasonable thing to do!! How is a DOG going to spend, in the case of Leona Helmsley, $2 billion dollars?! Do you not have any family, or friends that would take care of your dog lovingly? I also would like to question the owner and ask: Who do you TRUST to deal with your pet’s money? Its not like the dog is going to be like “Hey, I need a lawyer.” Do you not have any grandchildren that have University funds? An organization you strongly support? It’s not that I don’t love pets, I have a cat, its just that this money could be used in a WAY more productive way.

To Be or Not To Be

We should all be aware of what is going into our bodies, but unfortunately, there are many underlying aspects that we should question about the food we eat. But the topic of whether your food is genetically modified is not something that you usually think about. Many of the genetically modified foods that are sold are not labeled in the U.S. Genetically modified foods have been around for about forty-years, but have been used on a much wider scale in the last few years. Much like the States, Canada does not have the requirement of food producers to identify if the food is genetically modified.  In the Europe and other nations around the world, genetically modified products are labeled for the consumers advantage. This is unethical that it is the job of the consumer to do all the research. With limited research, there are still many unknown factors about how it affects our health, as well as the environmental cost. Although we would want to eat all natural, fresh foods everyday, we may not even know if what were eating is the real deal.
