Things to Learn Today

I was reading up a little more on the Biafran war on Wikipedia for this book we’ve been reading in one of my classes — Half of a Yellow Sun is an absolutely fabulous novel, by the way, that I highly encourage you to read — and you know how one thing leads to another on Wikipedia.

From there I learned that this was the event that started Médecins Sans Frontières, and then I read James Orbinski’s speech upon accepting the Nobel Peace Prize for MSF in 1999. It’s an interesting speech that differentiates between the humanitarian and the political, in what is in itself, I think, a curious mixture of the two.

I found it particularly interesting because I’ve been having conversations lately with folks about the Responsibility to Protect, and it’s fascinating to see the many different, nuanced opinions that a group of apparently similar people have…

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to make it, as I have to work on my essays. I got an extension on one of them, though, so I can foresee getting through a few more days than originally deemed possible!

Deadline Diligence

I woke up sick this morning. I haven’t worked out yet if I have a cold or the flu; I’m supremely groggy at the moment. If I could, I would be in bed right now, but unfortunately I have six papers due in these two weeks, none of which are completed at the moment. Stress levels are high.

I’m working on one of them right now which is a lot more work than I originally anticipated. Instead of slogging three essays off this long weekend, I am still on this same, one paper due tomorrow.

Nothing like deadlines to keep me working, though. Not only have I been tottering about the house doing chores — my parents are visiting in the next few days, so I need to undertake spring-cleaning of epic proportions before then — I’ve also completed my course evaluations! I’m not sure why I feel so proud of this, but I’m glad I won’t be receiving any more emails bugging me to complete them; my inbox is already overflowing with messages I need to respond to.

Back to my essay I go.

Being a sick student at this time of year is the worst.

Course Evaluations Link?

Did anyone get the link for where you can actually do course evaluations? The email I received was missing it.

Irck!

Irck! This is the sound of my second failed attempt to apply to a UBC Childcare position through CareersOnline.

Last time I waited until the last day it was accepting applications before I set about getting my documents together, only to find that the posting had disappeared. I thought perhaps I had remembered wrong; my bad.

This time the posting appeared about a week ago. I spent the weekend working on my resume — my standard resume doesn’t have much of my experience working with children — and got home today intent on finishing my cover letter, only to find that the posting is once again gone!

Of course, all this just means I really ought to learn to apply to a job I want the minute I see it. Lesson learned, I hope.

Time to go back to haunting my various career websites.
