Virginia Wolf by Kyo Maclear

This was one of the books Dr. Shoemaker brought in and I was blown away! Everything from the writing style, images, and underlying themes really caught my attention. I highly recommend checking it out if you haven’t already! I believe this is a great book to bring in during a mental health unit or to just simply teach patience and understanding.

    Hey Avnit,
Thank you for sharing! I had a look at this book myself and think you could also use this book to demonstrate simply the power of love and friendship, empathy and how we can bring our loved ones out of sadness (and depression). Just like you said it would be a great choice for a mental health unit. It’s a simply beautiful story that is strongly complemented by the equally beautiful illustrations by Isabelle Arsenault. The illustrations truly add to the power of the story and take it even further through visual imagery. There seem to be a lot of ‘hidden’ ideas in this book which could open the doors to create classroom discussions.

    Hey Avnit!

I also got a chance to look at this book! It is incredible inventive and the mixed media illustrations, using ink, pencil, watercolor, and gouache, are beautiful. This would definitely be a great book to include in a text set for a unit that focused on mental health or even for a text set introducing works of Virgnia Wolf .The more we engage with different forms of text the easier and more accessible text sets are becoming.
