English 301 is an online course focusing on the fundamental communications in the professional world. Throughout this online learning environment, students are expected to be able to work by themselves, consult their instructor Erika Paterson, and collaborate with their writing teams.

The following written communication will be exercised and tested:

  • abstracts
  • proposals
  • applications
  • reports
  • correspondence

The following online communication will be exercised and tested:

  • emails
  • texts
  • Web Folio
  • networking

Below are some of the objectives for this course:

  • introduce students to aspects of writing for the business and professional world
  • Encourage online discussion, peer review, and the production with fellow peers
  • Students should be able to create an online Web Folio with an additional resume
  • Reflecting on the student’s writing and self-editing skills

The course is broken into four units. The first unit will focus on introduction with the instructor and other students, learning to create an online site and introduction to the principles of technical and business writing. The second unit will focus on learning how to create a report proposal and network strategies. The third unit will focus on drafting a formal report along with forming a resume and job application skills. The fourth unit will focus on finalizing the formal report along with forming social networking skills.

An expectation I have for this course is to be able to form technical skills to write resumes and reports professionally. To articulate my work clearly and concisely with future co-workers and bosses. If the work can’t be communicated effectively, it won’t be valuable for the project or workspace. Even worse, if the work is misinterpreted, it can form potential harm to the project or workspace. Technical writing provides clarity to important information being shared across written and online spaces.
