Baking
From the time I was a little girl, I have always had a passion for baking. It began with making imaginary food in the bathtub, and eventually evolved into making beautiful cakes for friends and family. The cakes in the gallery above are a few examples of what I have made over the years.
My skills in cake decorating evolved over time with hard work and practice. I did not have a teacher, so I developed my talent through watching YouTube tutorials, and reading online forums. I have learned through hard work and dedication. I love creating beautiful cakes because of the sense of pride it gives me. Each cake that I endeavour to make is a bigger challenge than the last and always provides seemingly endless frustrations. However, as soon as I see the looks of awe when it is finished, I know it was well worth the effort. While I do not bake as often as I once did, I have now translated my passion into my current job.
I am employed as a home aid for a retired couple and their physically disabled daughter. My biggest task around their house is cooking, and preparing meals to be frozen for later. I love what I do, and I recognize the impact that something as simple as good, beautiful food can have on a person’s life. For this reason, I have chosen the topic of traditional cuisines for my FNIS 100 Big Idea Project. Through personal experience, I have learned the power of food in peoples lives, so I am excited about the opportunity to explore food from the perspective of Indigenous peoples.
