Through using DEM data along the Fraser River, we were able to effectively map floodplain area along the Fraser using the flooding out technique. Using our floodplain map, we were then able to assess the effects on roadways and populations of 1m and 2m increases in water elevation in rivers.  We conclude that two major regions were found to be significantly in danger of flooding; the area around the Nicomekl and Serpentine river in south Surrey, and the Trans Canada Highway between Chilliwack and Hope. With knowledge of the areas at risk for flooding, flooding preventative structures such as dykes should be upgraded and built to a proper standard as current reports indicate that only 13% of dykes are of passable quality in the Lower Mainland [8]. Sufficient resources should be given to constructing new and possibly upgrading existing dike structure along the Fraser especially at areas listed above. Even though that costs for upgrading existing dike systems or constructing new dikes may be costly, the potential losses and damages from flood events will be even more costly if certain protective measures are not in place before another major flooding event occurs in the future.
