ENGL 301

English 301- Technical writing focuses on developing writing strategies that lead to clear, effective, and professional communication in business environments. In particular, the course seeks to accomplish this through studying various forms of communication in the work environment, through introducing resources for networking and through involving students in scenarios activities that resemble common situations faced during one’s career. First, the courses seeks to familiarize students with the different modes of writing in business and technical environments. This includes on-line platforms ranging from messaging services like email or text, to networking applications like web folio or LinkedIn. Moreover, the course aims to point students to a variety of different career development services provided on campus. Plus, students will also explore and improve ways to present their resumes using on-line tools. As well, the course also provides an opportunity for students to engage collaboratively in activities that simulate the work environment. Through these assignments, students get a chance to practice the skills learned in class and get the opportunity to receive peer and instructor feedback. All in all, this course is a chance for students to familiarize and develop their professional communication skills in preparation for the work place.

My goals for this course is to develop tools for technical writing I can refer to in the future. This involves creating an archive of examples of different forms of documents and creating guidelines for proper writing etiquette in the workplace. In addition, I hope to establish a work flow for publishing professional documentation using tools I am familiar with such as LaTeX and emacs. On top of this, I aim to polish my LinkedIn profile in preparation for graduation such that it can be an effective bridge to discover opportunities and be discovered by potential employers.
