Orangina!

So, I was looking at some of our classmates posts and I found one both interesting and kinda creepy. It was Diego’s post on Orangina’s latest marketing campaigne. They are advertising that their drink is natural with “no colouring agents” and “no artificial flavouring”. So, to go along with this they are using wild animals and dressing them up to look like humans. Some ads, these animals are dressed up kind of provocatively. In this sense, I find these ads very disturbing, which leads be to the question “Do you think that this advertising is effective?”

I think that be having many different ads with these animals in them, one can tell instantly that the ad will be for Orangina. In this respect, I think that the commercials will provide good brands awareness.

Good luck on exams everyone!

Fail blog

Fail blog was established in 2008 and has been growing in popularity ever since. It is estimated that around 4,300,000 people visit this blog monthly. Pretty much, it is a compilation of people that send pictures of things that they have seen failing at doing something. An example of this is:

However, this blog doesn’t only show fails. They show “wins” as well. Generally, these are more intelligent or creative posts like this one:

Lowe’s is a hardware store, so it is creative in the sense that their bill board is only half-built. Overall, I think that if there were more advertisements like this, companies could post these on Fail Blog. This way it will be exposed to many more viewers, AND it will be like free advertising! You can’t lose, right?

What do you think? Would this work?

Starbucks: New product

Product line depth
Starbucks is well known for its product line depth. They have a variety of drinks that they have to offer. They serve hot chocolate, cappuccinos, lattes, Mochas, espressos, macchiatos, tea, frappuccinos, smoothies, and of course, their high quality brewed coffee. This is appealing to coffee drinkers because there are many more drinks that are offered so one can get their fix of caffeine.

To address recent changes in consumer preferences, Starbucks has further increased its depth by adding a new product. They have released a drink that is directly trying to compete with energy drinks. Many young caffeine consumers choose to drink energy drinks over coffee. Starbucks is clearly trying to take some of the market share that energy drinks have to offer. Starbucks’ new drink is called “Doubleshot.”  It is an espresso drink that is bottled in the exact type of can that energy drinks are bottled in. They even advertise it as a “Premium” energy coffee drink.

They come in several different flavours:

Energy+Cinnamon Dolce Drink
Energy+Coffee Drink
Energy+Mocha Drink
Energy+Vanilla Drink

Thought this was pretty cool. So for all you energy drink fans, check these out!

McDonald’s

It is clear that Mcdonald’s is marketing to price sensative consumers. This advertisment raises the issue of companies (like starbucks) charging much higher prices for essentially the same product. By simply having this statement “Four bucks is dumb,” and showing the McDonald’s logo, consumers can safely assume that Mcdonald’s coffe is cheaper than $4.00.In addition, It lets consumers know that McDonald’s is making a better effort to compete in the coffee market. As a result, consumers will now seriously consider McDonald’s for their coffee. Customers will bee attracted to the low price of their coffe, but also because of the extensive menu and other products that McDonald’s has to offer. So overall, I think this advertisement is very simple but very effective.

Pepsi Advertisement

So i was looking through other students’ blogs and came across this advertisement
from Norbert Ma’s Blog. Check it out.
This advertisement reminds me of a couple other advertisements Pepsi has done.

YouTube Preview Image

Pepsi has done a good job diversifying its product as well:

Pepsi is clearly trying to target young men with their “Pepsi Max” soft drink. This product is directly competing with Coke Zero. They have done a good job at marketing their product.

And finally, There have been many funy commercials where Coke and Pepsi have been poking fun at each other (like in Norbert’s blog):

ESC Saves Lives

European experts estimate that up to 40 per cent of single vehicle crashes could be avoided if all cars had ESC

What Is ESC?

According to wikipedia,

Electronic stability control (ESC) is a computerized technology that improves the safety of a vehicle’s stability by detecting and minimizing skids. When ESC detects loss of steering control, it automatically applies the brakes to help “steer” the vehicle where the driver intends to go. Braking is automatically applied to individual wheel, such as the outer front wheel to counter oversteer or the inner rear wheel to counter understeer. Some ESC systems also reduce engine power until control is regained. ESC does not improve a vehicle’s cornering performance, it rather helps minimize the loss of control. According to IIHS and NHTSA, one-third of fatal accidents could have been prevented by the technology

To give you a first hand look at what exactly this does, check out this very good video on youtbe on ESC.

As you can see from the video, ESC would prevent many accidents and car crashes. I think this is something that should be manditory in cars today.

However, the most frightening thing about ESC, is the fact that hardly anyone knows about it and its benefits. I think that it is important that people are made aware of its benefits.

My uncle, Glen Nicholson,  is actually a very strong advocate for ESC, and has been urging the government to make it manditory in all new vehicles. Here is an article featuring him in the news. http://www.cbc.ca/consumer/story/2007/10/30/esc-canada.html

This leaves me with two questions for you:
Did you know what ESC was before reading this blog?
Would you pay the extra money to get ESC in your vehicle?

Robot Cars?

Recently, Google has released a report saying that they have out robot cars to the test! Yes, that’s right. These cars are being completely operated by robots!

Please read the link below:
Google’s Robot Cars article

Google’s Robot Cars Coming to a Traffic Jam Near You

on 13 October 2010, 17:55
by RedHerring

Google’s robots drive more than search engines these days. The company has launched robot cars on the highways that drive safer than the best human drivers who enjoy the lowest insurance rates. Google asserts its robot drivers can save lives, reduce traffic jams, and lighten the load, allowing for light weight cars that are more fuel efficient and easier on the environment.

Google’s robot cars have made road trips spanning over 140,000 miles, starting from Google’s Mountain View campus to its Santa Monica office right on down to Hollywood Boulevard to trade parking spaces with the stars. The cars have even managed to drive down San Francisco’s Lombard Street, one of the steepest and curviest streets in the nation that’s also a continual tourist traffic jam. Only one accident ever occurred, when a Google robot car was rear ended while stopped at a traffic light. Apparently, even robot cars can be the victims of tailgaters.

Driven by robots, the cars have human drivers who can take over with a touch of the button in case the robots decide to go haywire. The automated cars use video cameras, radar sensors and a laser ranger finder to sense traffic. Google maps keep them on track.

“Safety has been our first priority in this project,” Sebastian Thrun, a Google software engineer, explained on Google’s blog. “ Our cars are never unmanned. We always have a trained safety driver behind the wheel who can take over as easily as one disengages cruise control. And we also have a trained software operator in the passenger seat to monitor the software. …And we’ve briefed local police on our work.”

The technology was developed by a team of engineers from the DARPA Challenges, a line of robot vehicle races organized by the US government. Google’s automated vehicle designers include Chris Urmson, the technical team leader of the CMU team that won the 2007 Urban Challenge; Mike Montemerlo, the software lead for the Stanford team that won the 2005 Grand Challenge; and Anthony Levandowski, who built the world’s first autonomous motorcycle that participated in a DARPA Grand Challenge, and who also built a modified Prius that delivered pizza without a person inside.

Google contends that robot domination is not its number one priority. Traffic safety is, however, and the company argues that computer driven cars can drastically reduce the more than 1.2 million lives lost every year in highway accidents, as cited by World Health Organization statistics.

“We believe our technology has the potential to cut that number, perhaps by as much as half,” Thrun alleged.

Traffic jams may also become a thing of the past, Thurn hinted.

“We’re also confident that self-driving cars will transform car sharing, significantly reducing car usage, as well as help create the new ‘highway trains of tomorrow,’” Thurn said. “These highway trains should cut energy consumption while also increasing the number of people that can be transported on our major roads. In terms of time efficiency, the U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that people spend on average 52 minutes each working day commuting. Imagine being able to spend that time more productively.”

As robots make the roadways safer, cars can also weigh less, reducing fuel consumption.

“We’ve always been optimistic about technology’s ability to advance society, which is why we have pushed so hard to improve the capabilities of self-driving cars beyond where they are today,” Thurn explained. “While this project is very much in the experimental stage, it provides a glimpse of what transportation might look like in the future thanks to advanced computer science. And that future is very exciting.”

Don’t expect robots to take you to work tomorrow, however. Even the most optimistic predictions foretell the technology’s at least eight years away from hitting the mainstream. A lot more needs to be tested, including the legal system. If a robot does get in a crash, for instance, whose responsible, the driver not paying attention thanks to technology or the company that programmed the robot in the first place?

As for now, Google’s robot cars are street legal, thanks to the human at the wheel ready to take over at the literal push of a button. While Google hired drivers with perfect driving records, the same can’t be said for all of us. Computers don’t drink and drive, sleep, or speed, but they do occasionally crash with disastrous results. Considering we’re still using GPS technology that has sent drivers down abandoned roads to their very deaths, computers have a lot of maturing to do before they can man the road trips.

______________________________________________________________

Not only is it amazing that they have been driving around for a combined 140, 000 miles, Not one car caused a single accident! Infact, one google car was even rear ended. An example of another case of human error on the road! Could you imagine how safe our roads would be if all of our cars were operated in this way? With every car working together electronicly, getting places will very safe and efficient. This will save many lives and reduce injuries.

This would even reduce traffic jams! Also, think what we could do with the time we would have in our cars. We could watch movies or read a book, or just enjoy the scenary.

Overall, this is a great idea. It will be very expensive and timely to implement, but it will improve traffic, save lives and make our roads safer. However, the most interesting part of this is that if there is the technology to do this NOW, it will be very interesting to see what technology will be available in the near future.

Could YOU Drive Down A Street Painted Like This??

This is something everyone must see. It is amazing. Street art at its greatest.

“Great Crevase – Edgar Mueller. Hard work: Together with up to five assistants,Mueller painted all day long from sunrise to sunset. The picture appeared on the East Pier in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland, as part of the town’s Festival of World Cultures”

And Yes, this is actually a concrete surface! It is a painting!!

Here is a more dramatic scene!

‘He spent five days, working 12 hours a day, to create the 250 square meter image of the crevasse,
which, viewed from the correct angle, appears to be 3D. He then persuaded passers-by to complete
the illusion by pretending the gaping hole was real.

‘I wanted to play with positives and negatives to encourage people to think twice about everythingthey see,’ he said. ‘It was a very scary scene, but when people saw it they had great fun playing on it and pretending to fall into the earth. ‘I like to think that later, when they returned home, they might reflect more on what a frightening scenario it was and say, “Wow, that was actually pretty scary” ‘

SO, what do you think? Could you walk down a street painted like this?

Hello world!

I think for most of our fellow Canucks fans we all remember the glory days when Markus Naslund was in his prime and leading the Canucks through many exciting seasons. Markus Naslund was considered one of the deadliest snipers in the NHL. It was because of this that we all new who sponsered him! It was Nike of coarse. This leads me to show you one of my favourite ads EVER! Enjoy.

After this advertisement was released, a sequal arrived! As Dan Cloutier look-alike has some fun.
