What?
The Self Assessment and Learning Plan Assignment is designed to track each dietetic students’ learning and experiences with regards to the ICDEP requirements within our profession. This is a useful tool in reflecting on highlights and learning points not only within the breadth of our university experiences but also personal life, work experience and volunteer experiences. I met with my reviewer and fellow classmate, Alexa Tucker to review our Indicators, Sources of Learning and SMART goals.

So What?
I had the opportunity to reflect quite far back into my work, volunteer and educational experiences. It is important to include extra-curricular and personal experiences in recording our development with regards to the requirements because these skills can be picked up and revisited in a variety of settings. Because Alexa and I have both volunteered at the Healthy Heart Clinic at St.Paul’s and have taken many of the same courses, we were able to help each other with filling in gaps within the sources of learning and reminding the other of activities in which an indicators could be met.

This assignment is important because it a tool to track our learning outcomes with specific indicators within the ICDEP. The program prides itself in ensuring students meet each ICDEP requirement with proficiency prior to graduation and this is a fantastic method to document this process. By revisiting this document in the future, we will be reminded of activities and learning experiences we may forget about. In addition, it will be a reference tool with regards to where we learned specific skills and which indicators our SMART goals directly accomplish. The SMART goals are important for identifying gaps in learning and areas for self-growth within the profession. It is a proactive way at tackling these goals with incentives, a clear deadline, and a chance to report back to a group.

Now What?
I look forward to working on my two SMART goals:
1. Self study: Specifically in the areas of gastrointestinal disorders, dysphagia, and enteral and parenteral nutrition. Potentially volunteering with GI researchers in Vancouver.
2. Improve counselling and active listening skills: Register for DC “Counselling for Behaviour Change” and to research and practice active listening skills to accommodate for the patient’s goals and learning needs.

I look forward to reporting back to the class on these goals and my experience throughout the process.
