Sex Sells But Sense Sells Better

This is another interesting Thai advertisement that consists of all GAN. Above linked video is a TV commercial for Bangkok Insurance and it is somewhat similar to the Cheer beer commercial.

They are similar in ways that;

  • They both familiarize the situations in their commercials with the viewers’ daily life – by dividing the advertisement into three different situations that are based on daily backgrounds such as an office, parking lot, restaurant, store, highway and a house. Viewing such ordinary venue and people (instead of celebrities) to their audience automatically familiarize such situations with the viewers. (Although for the insurance company advertisement, they are meant to be extremely unlikely to happen in ordinary life in order to sell their product/ service, at least the people and location involved in the advertisement is very familiar.)
  • They both broaden the target audience by including foreigners (either visitors or residence) that stands for about 14 million people. Having English subtitles to explain the circumstances in advertisements (like the beer commercial) helps those foreigners, who communicate better in English than in Thai, to understand the advertisement. However by broadcasting a speechless commercial, the insurance advertisement leaves even stronger impression on the viewers (both Thai and foreigners).
  • They both require little marketing budget compared to other gigantic corporation based advertisements. The most expensive part in producing such insurance commercial is probably some skills required in using and modifying the computer graphics – which may be costly but surely less than those consists of both celebrities and high technology skills.
  • They are both ethical in a way that there are absolutely no sensational sexual scenes or any other unethical views in order to leave impression. They both demonstrates that sex is not only way to sell products/ services.

I found another commercial of Bangkok Insurance – it’s pretty good too!

Beer commercials CAN be ethical as well

Blog is TOO new to me, as one of the victims of technology evolution I have absolutely no idea of how to prettify this thing – neither a big fan of writing (nor reading). But I will just try my best keeping this blog most updated with some interesting advertisements as they were huge motivator for me to get interested in marketing!

advertisements for beer are extremely competitive in many ways. There are tons of them which are funny and catchy but according to my personal criteria for a GOOD advertisement, most of them includes half-naked woman, luxurious views, and sometimes even unethical and offensive to some of the audience. However the following video, a Thai beer commercial that I watched online about three to four years ago personally has been THE BEST advertisement perfectly fitting into what I concern as a GAN (Good Advertisements’ Needs).  Anyways, I think it is superb for three main reasons.

  • This advertisement is targeting broad audience by providing English subtitles so travelers or visitors to Thailand (statistically about 14 million every year) could also actually get the information.
  • This advertisement clearly is budget-friendly as there are no famous celebrities involved nor particularly expensive tools/ materials/ computer graphics used.
  • This advertisement is ethical although the advertising product (beer) may be not – there is absolutely no sensational visuals such as sexual appearance, offensive scenes and etc.
