Andre Holyn

Andre was born and raised in Montego Bay, Jamaica, where he lived for 11 years and did 7 years of schooling, which included kindergarten and primary school. In 2004, he travelled to Shenzhen, China with his parents where he learnt Mandarin and he studied for 6 years. In 2010, he went to Hong Kong for his last two years of high school.
Andre came to Canada from Hong Kong in 2012 to pursue a diploma in Forest Operations with a minor in Commerce since it is the closest major to civil engineering available at UBC. However, while at UBC, he fell in love with forest operations because of the opportunity to enjoy nature while studying a range of aspects about forests, such as soil science, watershed protection, wildlife management, silviculture, machinery, forest policy, forest economics, road design, and forest pathogens. Andre thinks that his university time is passing by too fast because of all the interesting people he has met, the supporting and caring professors he has, the engaging studying environment that he is provided with, and the interesting topics in the classrooms. These are the big reasons and conditions that made Andre strive to become a better, more motivated student. Andre plans to obtain a professional engineer certification and a Master of Forest degree from the UBC Faculty of Forestry.
Apart from the educational side, social and community aspects are big parts of his life. He really enjoys travelling with friends, playing basketball, and volunteering. While at UBC, Andre has traveled to various cities around the world, such as Paris, Montreal, Quebec City, New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Diego and Toronto. Andre also enjoys being a volunteer during his free time. He has worked for many different clubs here at UBC such as centennial harvest feast, student advisory committee, etc… Being a volunteer gives Andre a lot of opportunities to meet new people, engage in more activities and gain more knowledge from different fields of interest.
