Welcome to my Classroom!
My name is Mr. Wong and I’m currently a teacher candidate at UBC with a focus in Technology Education. I recently completed my practicum at Steveston London Secondary School, teaching grades 8-12 in a variety of subjects such as Tech 8, Drafting and Woodwork. I have been signed on to the Richmond School District (#38) as a teacher for September. However, I wasn’t always a teacher candidate…. so here is a little about me.
I was born and raised in Vancouver and graduated from Killarney Secondary School in 2010. I’ve always had a focus on academic subjects as I enjoyed the challenge behind math and science. However, I spent most of my electives on technology education courses and went through the automotive program at the school. After graduation, I spent some time in my undergrad taking general classes as I didn’t know which direction I wanted to go. Eventually, I lost my interest in applied sciences and gained an interest in history. After completing my studies in history, I was still lost. I searched for programs and was a few seconds away from applying to computer sciences at BCIT as I tinkered with technology at home and it seemed to align close enough to my interests to land me a job. That is when I came upon the TTED program and realized that it was the fit for me. I’ve always enjoyed hands-on work, and automotive was my favourite class in high school. I had previously coached and worked with students in my jobs and everything about the TTED program resonated with my values. I spent 2 years at BCIT completing my diploma in technology with the TTED program and furthered my interest into technology education with a focus in electronics and drafting. I’m now at UBC completing my teacher education and will hopefully be brainwashing educating the children of the future.
With the formal stuff out of the way; contrary to many student beliefs that teachers are robots that sleep in school, I do have a life and hobbies I partake in. I was a former competitor in Tae Kwon Do and have received my 2nd Dan black belt. I studied martial arts since the age of 7, and I competed starting at the age of 9. I also played badminton competitively in high school, and was named team captain in the senior year. Current day, I am a self-proclaimed power lifter and work on hobby electronics as well as solid modelling for 3D printing.
If you have any burning questions, you must ask me in person!
Mr Wong.
