The “Stats” talk

This was an annoying experience. I already knew most of the stats that these 8 teachers/recent education program grads told us already. They told us that only 40% of the people in our program will make a successful career as a teacher and teach for 5 years or longer. They kind of attacked us with this information and then in the smaller groups they made us justify why we want to be teacher and asked us what is going to be the reason that we will not be one of the successful 40%. I think that most of the teacher candidates, including me, were offended by these teachers and felt that they were using scare tactics and wasting our time.

Seminar with Mitch and Alex

Being the first to do anything is never easy. I felt really lucky to have randomly been part of a group with Alex and Mitch though. We definitely worked together well and embodied co-authoriship in our collaboration together. Mitch and Alex are alike and different at the same time. They were on the same page but on different pages at the same time. They wanted to approach the topic of Liam different ways. Mitch had a more structured approach that he wanted to take in the seminar and Alex had a very broad approach that he wanted to take. I feel like my part in our group was to act as a mediator between Mitch and Alex. I helped to solve disagreements and think about the logistics of our seminar. The seminar itself went well. We each had certain parts of the seminar that we led that suited our own strengths, however we learned a lot from each other by finding out what we each thought were the pertinent things to cover about Liam’s case. Alex and Mitch were both very interested in the theory and I was more interested in the practice and our seminar was a reflection of the connections that we made between theory and practice.

Group work about Liam

Are group has made a great start with Liam’s case. We divided our readings and each read one of the articles (other than the core readings). I read the darling and Steinburg article, but because of our group work discussing the articles and connecting them to each other, our personal experiences, and the case I feel like I have read all of them and that I understand all of the group readings really well.

This image is a photo of the notes that I was taking while we were doing our group work on this case.

Orientation – Education Program 2014/2015

Time to get down to business and crack open the books! I have been anticipating starting this program for many years now. So far the orientation has not been what I expiated it would be. We have been spending a lot of time talking about who we are and I am not always comfortable talking about who I am. I guess I’m still trying to figure it out…
