As I reached the end of my formal inquiry project regarding the role of video games in student learning and development there were some questions that naturally arose from my findings. Action games provide some of the greatest benefits to aiding student learning and development however they also provide the greatest risk of promoting aggressive behavior. My question, which requires further research is related to another research I conducted in my undergraduate degree based on intercultural communication conflict theory, that is how does the effect of action video games differ among different cultures? For example, individualistic cultures which is a pattern found in most northern and western regions of Europe and in North America tend to display more competing conflict strategies whereas, collectivistic cultures which is a pattern common in Asia Africa, the Middle East, Central and South America and the Pacific display more accommodating and avoiding conflict strategies (Ting-Toomey & Kurogi, 1998). Therefore, do the negative effects posited by violence in video games have more of a significant impact in one, that is are they a bigger concern in individualistic cultures than in collectivistic cultures? I want to learn as much as I can about this so I may acquire the skills and knowledge needed to successfully use video games in enhancing student learning.
