Guiding Principles

Draft Guiding Principles:

  • A sense of urgency regarding our current social and ecological crises
  • Honouring a playful, exploratory attitude toward teaching and learning
  • Innovative design, curriculum and pedagogy
  • Play a supportive role for teacher education
  • Recognize and explore the relationships between land, food and healthy communities
  • Acknowledge the complex social and ecological history of the land, particularly in the context of colonialism
  • Create an interdisciplinary and creative space for teaching, learning and research
  • Contribute to UBC’s Sustainability Academic Strategy in Place and Promise to explore and exemplify sustainability on campus through viewing the ‘campus as a living laboratory’ and ‘campus as an agent of change’
  • Build on and complement successes at the UBC Farm, Centre for Sustainable Food Systems by creating an urban-scale, land-based outdoor classroom
  • Create an inviting space through active community participation at all stages of the project
