Assignment #4

Scholarly Essay

Deciding on the topic of my scholarly essay is a bit of a quandary for me. We have to choose a topic that corresponds with one of the weekly topics or themes and write a scholarly paper of about 3000 words exploring media and technology in education. We have to take a position (state a thesis or argument) and provide evidence, through examples and narrative, to support the position. I am personally interested in how the culture affects the e –learning, particularly to the people in developing country who have different background from the western society where e-learning was originated. I hesitated to write about this at first and pondered if any of my classmates would be interested in my topic because the issue is a bit specific to Thai learners and e-learning. However, I have pointed my paper toward e -learning in higher education institutions in Thailand and hopefully this will urge Thai people to see how their learning styles can either enhance or hinder e-learning. The purpose of this writing is to emphasize the cultural backgrounds that influence the styles of Thai learning and analyze how those learning styles promote or hinder e-learning. I used the principles of Connectivism Theory and Prensky (2009) learning skills that are essential to twenty first century learners as a guideline. The focus of my paper is the issue, not the solution to the problem.

Anyone interested in learning about how Thai Learning Styles, influenced by the cultural backgrounds, can enhance or hinder e-learning in education in Thailand, please follow the link here.poodwanp scholarly Essay ETEC511 64B

Live Forum

We started our first Live Forum when we were about one month into the course after we all settled into the course readings. I felt too nervous to attend the first LF since this is my first course in the MET program and of course that would be my first LF ever. I just wanted to read the script to see how it went  and be ready for the second LF. We had our second LF almost two week after the first one, and this time I attended. Fortunately the topics were what I am interested in, Electronic Media Literacy  (What needs to be done) Poverty and Digital Divide (Perspectives). We have the following “Rules of Engagement” to keep in mind while attending the LF.

 1. To realize our live forum values, and make the meetings productive and fulfilling, the instructor(s) has to facilitate. We have learned this by experimenting.

2. In this virtual classroom, the instructor(s) will queue up respondents to questions or issues.

3. The order of students follows the order logged into the chatroom. If someone wants to pass, a simple “pass” typed in and entered will work.

4. Those who are queued up can prepare their comments while waiting.

5. Use chat acronyms to help simplify typing and communication.

6. If we all follow the rules we will reduce the chance that someone feels disregarded or left out.

7. Be patient with each other.

However, my first and second LF didn’t exactly follow all of the above rules. We did not take turns; we just joined in whenever we were interested in that idea and wanted to elaborate more. I find this way very dynamic and keep my ideas flow and fast. Although, sometimes we went off the topics but all in all we still focused on our educational technology!

The later Live Forums conducted each week by Discourse Leadership Groups, were facilitated differently. Some followed the above rules strictly so everyone had a chance to say something, but I find that doing this make me a bit nervous when it is my turn and I don’t have much to say, and if I let it pass, I will have to wait a long while before it comes back to my turn again because each time we had about 16-20 participants.

Assignment #3

Assignment#3 Discourse Leadership

Each week the group chose a topic from the schedule and presented the readings to the class. I chose Module 4 the Anthropology & Sociology of Educational Technology: Cultural and Social Foundations.

 These are our readings.

Primary Readings

Secondary Reading:

Mead, M. (1955). Cultural patterns and technical change. New York: Mentor.

Our group was the first group so we had very little time to prepare and coordinate but we managed to present our work to the class right on time. We met virtually on Skype for the first time and met asynchronously later on our discussion board on Vista. We chose to present our presentation on PBworks.

We have to follow the approach indicated below.

 1. Outline the readings (primary and secondary sources) and post this outline to the group.

2. Provide a brief overview of the readings based on the outline.

3. Define key terms or methodological and theoretical concepts that are challenging.

4. Design handouts, discussion questions and presentation media for clarifying the reading

5. Design activities for the group with attention to inclusive participation. Possible activities

include:

Discussion focus questions and moderation of discussion forums

Chat / Live Forums or Live Classroom

Wiki / Interactive Web / Prezi

Voice & Podcast, etc.

6. Moderate and bring closure to the topic for the week.

Assignment #2 Tooning

Tooning Educational Technology —

Educational technology is a serious subject and not at all ironic or something to laugh at   ; – ) However, this assignment encourages us to step out of character, out of the shell, and out of the box to make a satire, bit of irony, or fun of ET, ETnophilia, ETnophobia, and ETers.

I found this assignment  fun and very productive for reviewing of the past modules. Also, the course’s readings gets heavier by this time , this assignment did help me relaxed and laugh when I read the classmate’s toonings. ( We post our toonings to our discussion board before we submit it).  We have to come up with an idea that’s related to our educational technology. I did my keyword definition on digital divide in e learning, so I continued my tooning from the same concept, but to digital divide among generation. I used toondo to do my assignment, but we discovered many other resources from our instructor and classmates.

Here is my tooning      ppoodwantooning

Assignment #1 ETEC 511

Defining Keyword

Our first assignment was to write a 500 word Defining Keyword Essay. We were required to choose any word related to e-learning, educational technology, learning technologies, ICT, or new media or coin a new keyword. We will also have to coordinate with peers so there is no duplication. Most entries should include a definition, explanation, development and details and, if applicable, examples. I chose a “Digital Divide in e-learning” and here is the link to my key word essay. ppoodwan keyword definition
