“Introducing Web 2.0: wikis for health librarians” – new article in JCHLA

pen, writing, academia, articles, papers

Published just a few hours ago, here is a new article by Dean Giustini and yours truly, this time about using wikis in health sciences:

Barsky E, Giustini D. Introducing Web 2.0: wikis for health librarians. Journal of the Canadian Health Libraries Association. 2007 28(4): 147-150

Being a proponent of open-access publishing, I have to say that this journal is open access and you can view our article for free!

It was a great privilege and fun working with Dean – a super experienced health librarian who is also a mentor and a good friend. I have to admit that thanks to him – this is one of our best articles in the series so far!

It continues the series of articles I co-write with other medical librarians about using social software in health sciences:

Have fun reading!!

Web 2.0 in health – a practical overview

Today, I presented two 1.5 hours workshops for the British Columbia Ministry of Health and British Columbia Ministry of Children and Family Development on Web 2.0 in health.

Here is my presentation in PDF format. Below is my presentation embedded in this post.

We had good discussions and brainstorming at the end of the sessions with the ministries folks on how those social technologies could be used in their everyday work and how they might impact their professional and personal lives.

I enjoyed the audience and found folks working in the ministries to be engaging and innovative.

Many thanks to my colleagues and friends whose work and ideas contributed to this presentation: Dean Giustini, Sally Taylor, Lindsay Ure, Katherine Miller, Susan Atkey, Sheryl Adam, David Rothman, Simon Neame, and many others! Please also note the reference list at the end of presentation for further follow-up.

Social technology in health library practice and outreach >> Presentation for Vancouver Coastal Health

On Monday I did a presentation (this is just that time of year when lots of institutions have time to learn and to start new initiatives, so I cannot stop preaching various outreach for libraries 🙂 for Vancouver Coastal Health folks – one of the largest health authorities in Canada on the use of social technology in library outreach.

It was interesting to me to see the differences between the application of those tools in academia (where I am employed) and in hospitals…

Take a look on the presentation in PDF format or see it embedded below:

Wiking in your library: a practical overview

wiki how.jpg

Today, I did a presentation for the Vancouver Association of Law Libraries (VALL) folks in Vancouver.

We discussed the use of Wikis in the libraries. I uploaded the PDF version of the presentation here.

I included different examples of Wikis use in the libraries and private companies, and in a nutshell, my verdict was:

1. Wiki is an excellent tool for internal projects collaboration, internal brainstorming and ideas sharing
2. For external projects try an online social software
3. Wiki is questionable for legal research, however might be of use to find unusual or anecdotal information
