Recap from day 2 of PhytoRCLASS
We reviewed day 1’s material and these general learning objectives/outcomes (formulated after discussion, and reflection):
- By the end of this program, participants will present data (in traditional and non-traditional ways, e.g. poem, drawing) to the rest of the group on a testable research question (questions) on the phytobiome.
- Participants will create material that can be provided for others about their process (what was helpful and what might be needed as well as final products) on the PhytoRCLASS website, which can be shared in an open way to anyone.
- Participants will reflect and provide feedback to help develop ideas for this two-week process to go from ideas/general questions about the phytobiome (plant, associated organisms, environment) to data and then presentation (traditional and non-traditional, e.g., poem, etc.) for the broader community.
We did a QIIME2 walk through:
We had feedback and discussion:
We went over proposed ideas and methods as well as gave one another feedback. Topics: nematodes given plants (e.g., tomato, dill, etc.) and environmental conditions (or categories of locations), sampling invertebrate communities of plants. Exploring open data to test how repeatable pH and soil microbe communities are in temperate forests and grasslands (data mining). We then were connected by email for the next steps.
We agreed that data related to our question is due at noon on Tuesday (earlier is fine) and to send to the whole group, so we can provide one another feedback. This is asynchronous. We will all reply and give one another feedback.
We discussed potential products for Thursday’s session. This is synchronous. We also discussed materials that would help modify this process for K-12 learners. We can explore other learners on Thursday’s session (off campus learners, etc.)
