Tier II Canada Research Chair in Water Resource Management

The Department of Geography at the University of Lethbridge invites applications for a Tier II Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Water Resource Management with applications to some combination of sustainable agriculture, rural economic development, natural resource governance or development of Indigenous communities.
The successful applicant will contribute from a human geographical perspective to the “earth and environment” research theme, one of five research pillars supporting the University of Lethbridge’s Comprehensive Institutional Plan. This strategic theme embraces a range of environmental research initiatives pertinent to effective land and water management practices and the interconnected problems revolving around regional development, agri-business and environmental sustainability.
We anticipate appointing a human geographer of outstanding promise at the rank of assistant or associate professor. Successful candidates must be within 10 years of earning their PhD and have an outstanding research profile, an innovative and original research programme, a strong track-record of obtaining external funding and the ability to work cooperatively to develop multi-faceted research projects in an interdisciplinary environment.
Evidence of research achievement should include major grants in support of research, publication in venues of significant impact, and the potential for training highly qualified personnel. Research specialties could include the water-energy-food security nexus, political ecology approaches to water resource governance, water policy at a range of spatial scales, or trans-boundary water issues. Teaching excellence is essential and candidates will be expected to contribute to a broad geography curriculum at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Located in southern Alberta, near the Rocky Mountains, Lethbridge offers a sunny, dry climate that is agreeably mild for the prairies, excellent cultural and recreational amenities and attractive economic conditions. Founded in 1967, the University has an enrollment of over 8,400 students from around the world. Our student body has grown by 50 percent in the last 10 years, phenomenal growth among institutions in Canada. Despite this growth, we have remained true to our vision – a student-focused, research-intensive institution, grounded in the liberal education tradition. Appointment to this Canada Research Chair position is subject to review and approval by the Canada Research Chairs Secretariat. Complete details about the CRC program can be found on the CRC website at http://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/.
Applications should include a detailed curriculum vitae, a two-page summary of the candidate’s proposed research program, and the names and contact information for three referees. The application materials should be submitted electronically to geog.applications@uleth.ca and the three confidential letters of reference should be forwarded directly by referees to Professor Wei Xu, Chair, Department of Geography, The University of Lethbridge, 4401 University Drive, Lethbridge, Alberta, T1K 3M4, copy by e-mail.
