The Stifling Modern Fetishism

This is my most recent project for my VISA 250 printmaking course. After I printed an edition of three on paper, I printed five t-shirts from my carved wooden board. I named this project The Stifling Modern Fetishism.

I was inspired and astonished by the cruel living environment of the sweatshop in developing countries. The globalized operation and manufacturing of goods today bring job opportunities to these countries’ workers, while these opportunities are highly associated with inhumane and toxic working conditions. As a Chinese girl who read about the high-frequency suicides in Foxconn, Shenzhen, the biggest Apple manufacturer in the world, I felt the urgency to uncover the struggles of developing world workers (mostly female) behind the shiny new iPhones and other commodities.

Interestingly, most people see this project as a critique of people playing with their phones all day long in all places without caring about the ongoing events nearby, like humans are controlled by phones. I also like this interpretation and find in both cases, our obsession to commodities, in this case, phones, lead to detrimental effects. Therefore I name this project as The Stifling Modern Fetishism.

My self-portrait

Here is my self-portriat for VISA 183 class (drawing and painting)-drew in 2015 November, at the first term of my first year. Giving up my drawing and painting course due to my heavy course load in high school, I was once deeply frustrated due to a feeling of losing my entire capability to draw and paint at all. However, after practicing my drawing skills in VISA 183, I realized surprisingly that I was still capable and strongly enthusiastic about drawing. This drawing is based on a picture of me sitting on my bed in rez, holding my fluffy bear brought from home. I used pencil to sketch for my face at body at first due to my familiarization with this technique. I found, after a while, that I might want to address the intimacy comfortableness my teddy provided and tried to use color pencil for the first time. This project brought my lost faith on drawing back.

Walking Through a Straight Cut

qingyang-liu

This is the first assignment for my VISA 110. I made multiple practices to walk from the bus loop and Koerner Library, which are my daily routines, and recorded my walk on the Strava app on my phone. I always tried to save time on the way. Straight line might be the best choice to practice. But UBC has too much construction sites to impede my action. Although I basically followed the same path, which most students used to walking on as short cuts on the lawn, the saturated soil and pond in the middle after precipitation diverted my route, This artwork forced me to learn to use photoshop for the first time and it succeeded. I am a beginner of using ps now 😉
