Regarding on the news article on CBC News (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/story/2013/09/07/bc-ubc-frosh-pro-rape-chant.html), University of British Columbia has pledged an investigation for the pro-rape chant that was sang in the Sauder School of Business’ welcome event.
As a Sauder student and a Froshee who has attended the Sauder Frosh, I feel this incident is extremely relatable to my life and I have a strong sense of honor towards my school. However, I also understand this pro-rape chant event is not only a personal problem, it is also a social and business issue. Sauder is not simply a school. It is a brand and has commercial and social influence among the society.
The pro-rape chant event may bring Sauder brand implication and accounting implication as direct consequences. Sauder is well-known and universally recognized as a professional and ethical business school in the world. The particular frosh leaders’ behaviors that are exposed to public, however, have a negative impact on Sauder’s reputation and branding. The content of the “pro-rape chant” somehow leads people to doubt with Sauder’s ethic. On the other hand, Sauder may face an accounting crisis due to the possible loss of sponsors. The sponsors may pull out their financial support to Sauder since they feel Sauder is not as how they expect or continuing supporting Sauder is against their business ethic.
In this event, even though Sauder is facing a huge and unexpected problem, I am still really proud of the series reactions and responses that Sauder had made right after the news was released, they all presented the high profession and high standard that Sauder School of Business has. The president of AMS and executives of CUS came to the public and took the responsibility for this incident. Dean of Sauder also clarified his and Sauder’s position at this incident, and stopped supporting Frosh to prevent similar events to happen again in the future. These authorities’ positive reflections presented our business ethic, high profession and high standard again to the public.
