Aragon’s Paris Peasant
For this week I decided to first see the lecture video before reading the book and when I heard that it was about surrealism I got excited as I know a few things about André Bréton although I have never read a book written by him. But most importantly I got excited as back in middle school I used to have an arts class in which we used to talk about different art movements and it used to be specifically about paintings and the life of the most important painters of each movement along with the things they used to paint and why.
In this course, we dedicated an entire bimester talking about surrealist painters like Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso in his surrealism period or Rene Magruite which is my favorite of these last three. But my favorite painter of this movement and one of my favorite painters is Joan Miro, who was also part of the surrealism movement but he had a mix of surrealism alongside abstract art which I enjoy a lot, so even though his art might be a bit different from the art from the artists mentioned above, he is also considered part of the surrealism movement.
With all of this in mind about surrealism, when I heard that the book was part of the movement, I got very excited to read it and sadly after reading the first few pages of the book I was a little disappointed as I believe this reading is a difficult one, at least for me which i’m not used to reading a lot. Also the idea of the book not following a normal novel structure made the reading not to be an enjoyable one for me.
I was really disappointed with this because as said before, Joan Miro, a surrealist painter, is one of my favorites ever and the reading just was not for me. I can appreciate all the surrealistic things in the reading and see how for someone that might be better at reading or that is looking for something different, may enjoy Aragon´s novel a lot but sadly not me.
Because of all of this, my question for this blog is if you guys enjoy the surrealism movement? And also in the case that anyone has some knowledge about surrealist painters, if you enjoy the surrealist paintings or the reading of this book more.
A great extension question that you’ve posed here, Daniel! You will see that Jon has already added some resources to the course page on other key texts from surrealism movement (the short/silent film Un ‘Chien Andalou’ here: https://rmst202.arts.ubc.ca/un-chien-andalou/) and I am sure we will discuss these connections in class this week!
Hello Daniel. I really enjolyed your insight on this weeks book. I concur with you in many points of your analysis. To answer your question. I do enjoy surrealism, I think it shows how the human imagination and creativity has no limits and it was relatively revolutionary to its time.
How about you?
Montserrat Avendano.
Hi, great blog post! I agree with you, surrealism is a really cool concept. I think it is something that really interests me.
