    Climate Emergency Week 2023

    Climate Emergency Fair

From February 6-10th, the University of British Columbia (UBC) held Climate Emergency Week: a series of events to take collective action for justice, people, and our planet.

Students, faculty, faculty, and staff organised several activities, workshops and events to bring the UBC community together to discover solutions to fight climate change at UBC and beyond.

On Wednesday, February 8 in the UBC Nest Atrium, the Climate Emergency Fair organized by the student-led UBC Sustainability Ambassadors was an opportunity to meet local organizations, student clubs, and UBC faculty and staff working hard to solve the climate crisis from 11:00am – 3:00pm (PST).

The SEEDS Sustainability Team participated in this event as exhibitors among many other great UBC student-based organizations such as AMS Sustainability, the Food Hub Market, UBC Farm but also UBC non-affiliated organizations as the CityHive or Surfrider Foundation Canada which are working hard to build climate solutions across our region.

It was a great opportunity for the team to introduce the SEEDS interdisciplinary initiatives work to advance our Big Five priorities, harness the: Campus as Living Laboratory concept and give more information about how students, staff and faculty can get involved.

    What’s next?

If you are interested to know more about different Climate Action related events and activities that take place at UBC or online, please visit the UBC sustainability webpage which provides plenty of opportunities to get involved in sustainability, both on-and-off campus.

The Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES) also hosts weekly seminars. See the link here for events hosted by IRES and here for events hosted by UBC Sustainability.

UBC biology student Alex Wong shares his insights from working with the citizen science project, the Butterflyway Project, and the importance of citizen science in nurturing people’s love for nature and involvement in conservation.

In late 2020, a collaborative effort between UBC Botanical Garden, the David Suzuki Foundation (DSF), Dr. Michelle Tseng, Assistant Professor of Botany at UBC, and local butterfly enthusiasts dedicated their time to construct a citizen science framework for the DSF’s Butterflyway Project.

Our weekly Wednesday night meetings were spent developing and preparing a plan for the 2021 butterfly season. Ultimately, the team split in half, and two goals for the season were laid out: 1) launch transects across the lower mainland with the help of Butterflyway Rangers, and 2) host a bioblitz for schools across BC that joined the Butterflyway Project in 2020.
