Built to break!

I was reading The Ubyssey, and I came accross an article on how companies make there products with a short lifetime so that they can make more sales in the future. I felt really satisfied after reading the article because I think that I deserved to know this sad truth about the products in the market. All these products are made with material that is cheap and really low in quality, which saves costs. The other good thing about using this strategy for the business is to be able to sell their products in the future. As companies keep innovating their products they would obviously want to have a market for them. They make products with a lifetime of a couple of years and after that with innovation in technology it would be better to buy the newer model instead of getting the old one repaired.

There are two easily observable issues with this production technique. Firstly we can not afford to have so much waste in the world. All of these products ahve to be dumped and wasted and most of them are not recyclable or eco-friendly. With global warming and pollution becoming such issues we need to be start thinking about this issue. It is because of our ignorance that recent statistics are showing that one carbon footprint of someone in the west harms 22 people in the developing countries. So we definitely have to address this issue before it boils out of the kettle. Secondly firms and marketing agents who are marketing such products with out informing  the customers about it. I think that is a moral, social and ethical issue. I think some fair trade and business organizations should start investigationg this.

Apple Adapters

Yesterday I was studying in the student lounge and I met a fellow student who had started his own business and I was really impressed by his ideas. He basically buys some chargers for cheap in bulk then sells them over the internet. First of all the website seems to work well for his business as he gets requests online and they just gather up in a database. He just has to check it out in time and then ship the chargers out to their respective destinations. On the website he also has a section where he compares the price that he sells adapters at with other retailers selling the same thing.

What i like about his business is that he has first identified a market segment and then created his product which such value that he exactly targets his market. People who lose their adapters and are hesitant to spend a lot of money on the replacement are the target market for this business. The way the advertise is also informative. They put advertisements on different sites and every time some one clicks on it they get charged a certain amount.

I gave him a very good suggestion to help him grow his business. Normally people who lose their charger are not aware of such a website or service, like I had no knowledge about it before he told me and thats why people might just go and buy it for expensive thinking that there is no other option. I advised him to put posters around sauder, so that whoever reads it becomes aware that such a service is available. They might not order there and then but they might actually get a flashback of the Advertisment if they lose their adapter, i.e making a lot of potential  customers aware of this business, might make them make use of it sometime later. The people do not even have to make an effort to remember, the brain automatically stores such information and normals recalls it if need, which in this case is wanting an adapter( or losing one). If implementing this Strategic with in the faculty works then he said he would consider doing it all over campus and maybe even contacting his friends in other universities and telling them to do the same.

Project Natal Xbox 360

I’m going to talk about the new project by Xbox. They are developing a gaming console which would allow us to play the video game with out controls. This would be the ultimate interactive gain and will revolutionize the world of ‘gaming’. A lot of people will look to replace there old consoles with this one as it offers technology not heard of before.

Xbox always makes advertisements that are very attractive for people who like to play games. The video shows you how much more interactive the game would be and how much real life it would be if you play a soccer game using your feet! It shows the different games boys and girls can play. From one side th company is expanding its target marketing as the advertisement has shows games for girls and this wasn’t really promoted before. On the other hand it is also missing out on young adults and adults who were always a huge part of the companies target market! It will also be very expensive initially and require big TV sets. The initial customers are most likely to be rich kids, instead of the hardcore Xbox fans!!

However, this advertisement has really got me excited. I can’t wait for the day when i can beat my opponents with some real punches and put the ball into the goal using my own kicking techniques. With the right marketing strategy Xbox should be able to make a lot of money of this product. We shall have to wait and see how this product does in the market!

Maybach

Maybach is a car made by Mercedes and Mclaren. Both of these German brands have come up with this ultimate luxury vehicle which costs a little more than 8 million dollars. There marketing strategy is based on one to one relationships with their customers. The car takes a year to makie after you place the order and they constantly keep you involved through out the production process. They let you pick the colors for the interior and exterior, choose how the car looks from inside, what kind of controls you want on the steering wheel, to the make of the watch inside the car.

All the engineers, designers e.t.c are in contact with you through out this process and this is very attractive to the specific kind of clientèle that they are targeting. Every customer is assigned a relationship manager for after sales services. Everything related to your car is taken care by this management team and you do not have to put any effort in to maintaining your car as long as you have the money to buy it in the first place.

This kind of involvement and service is very attractive to people who are spend 8 million dollars on this car. I think that because of the entire package it offers, the company has definitely satisfied and retained it rich customers over the years.

Microsoft 2018 concept

Hey Everyone,

I was looking at the advertisement for the concept of Microsoft 2018 software. I come to the opinion that Microsoft advertisement strategy is very customer centered. It has taken this advertisement straight out of the movies. It is trying to sell the idea that its software will become a part of our every day life while making our lives easier and making us dependent on it. This advertisement shows us how Microsoft will make our lives easier by managing all of our information systems and will give us an interactive software to use our information, this software will aid and follow us every where from the air plain to the toilet.

The only problem with this advertisement is that it does not tell us the negative affects of using this software. Microsoft is a huge multi-national corporation and if it tells us how its software will make our everyday lives easier, it has the responsibility to tell us that being so highly Dependant  on software to maintain all our personal information can be a great threat to our privacy and security. Organisations and people who posses the ability to breach the security of this software posses the strength to manipulate us.

I think that if a company as big as microsoft is honest with its customers its products will come as more desirable. No matter how big the company or how unique the product is, they should act responsibly when they act as informants to us.

Fifa 2011

Fifa has a very impressive marketing campaign. They have transformed football into a multi-billion dollar business. They sell everything from clothes to video games. Their video game is played by all kinds of people around the world and is one of their premier products.

I have recently started playing the game. It has all the different players and has every kind of match setting. They sell their product using the recognition of their own brand and that of the players in the game. The latest edition of the FIFA video game has chosen Kaka as their ambassador. The selection of the ambassador/cover face of FIFA games is crucial in attempting to reach out to even the apathetic sports fan. Kaka, as evident through his successes with the Brazilian team and more recently Real Madrid, perhaps the biggest sporting club in the world. Designing a video game merely dedicated to the “beautiful game,” watched by billions almost assures the people at Electronic Arts (EA SPORTS), the developer of the game, to cash in on a tremendous profit.

I was really impressed by Sean Combs. He went to Harvard business school for a year, but he dropped out because he was already making a lot of money in the music industry. He started his own record label and introduced musicians like biggie smalls. For a decade he was the richest music producer in North America.

He managed to make himself in to a brand.  He used his music as publicity for himself. His name sells more than his music. He used the recognition he had to make  a clothing brand. He made a clothing brand called ‘sean john’. they compete with brands like Zara, Next and Banana republic. Providing clothing for the middle/upper class. People who listen to his music are the potential custo mers. P diddy has managed to make his identity in to a brand. With this kind of marketing strategy he can sell anything using his own name.

The biggest competition that Sean has is Jay-z( sean carter). He is currently the richest music producer to make way and is almost worth 1 billion dollars. If Sean Combs manages to enrich his brand name, then he will manage to sell more than Jay_z

The competition between these two producers is unique. they are friends and make music together and still make a lot of money competing against each other.

Armani advertisment campaign

Hello Everyone!!

Sorry for the late post as I accidently fell asleep while working on this last night. I was looking around for ideas and Armani’s advertisment strategies caught my eye. As it seems, Armani makes use of a very persuausive campaign. It targets the rich segment of society which has an innate desire to look good and feel sexy. The lighting and theme of the Armani advertisments came as very attractive and appealing to me.

These Advertisments make use of Anamorphosis. Anamorphosis is the technique of constructing and image for the viewer using symbols, colours and language and once the viewer absorbs the information it becomes clear what the actual intention of showing that image was. All of us are well aware that megan fox is a sex symbol, the directors are trying to make use of her sex appeal to sell Armani underwear. The black and white colour adds to the class they are trying to attach with their brand.

They are also making use of gender persuasion as they also used Christiano Ronaldo for the male part of their adverisment campaign. This first of all targets all the football fans, more precisely the Ronaldo fans. Secondly it gives you a feeling of comfort and luxury. Thirdly it gives you the idea that you would enhance your sex appeal by using Armani underwear.

The need for ego-gratification becomes apparent in these Ads, while adding to the sense of power and mystery. Moreover the celebrities sexy bodies talk for themselves. These Ads aim to fulfill the need of feeling good about yourself, this need rests right on the top of Maslows pyramid of needs. The Armani underwear Ad campaign makes use of the cognitive consistency approach formulated by Fritz Heider. They try to use images to incur positive and negative emotions in the viewer and then they use them in a sequence that would optimise pleasure from watching the Ad and the want to buy the product.

Overall the Luxury of the brand is mantained and becomes more prominent with the use of the sexualy appealing imagery. I found these commercials very attractive and it personally made me want to invest some money in Armani underwear.
