Hey I am SOPHIE!
I am young Australian who is on exchange at UBC. I chose UBC for its great geography faculty and to be in the beautiful province of BC. I believe I am passionate, understanding and kind towards people, but am also fiery and will speak up when I believe something it wrong.
Similar to other 20-something-year-olds I often toss up the multiple avenues I could take, whether it be opening a coffee shop, being a musical theatre performer, or decking out a van and travelling around the world. For now however, my main vision is one that has stayed the same since I was 17.
In January of 2013, I attended a leadership conference in Sydney, with 200 other young girls who had travelled from all corners of the country. It was one of the best experiences of my life. I left feeling empowered and passionate about myself and other girls, I was truly inspired by the energy that we created together. Since then, I never lost that feeling of being so proud of being a girl. This had a great deal to do with the staff and speakers who lead the conference, and the girls who surrounded me.Following this conference, I went straight into my final year of high school, where my passion for education, and girl-power grew.
Since the conference, I have worked with groups of girls and educators, and it has made me so passionate about education and ensuring that girls understand that they can do whatever they want.
Now, I am currently studying a double degree in Arts and Education at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. After graduation, I am aim to work with young girls, maybe with the same organisation or a smaller one, and spread that same energy and empowerment that I felt at 17.
