Balloon Action

So I stumbled upon my friend Ashley Collin’s blog and found it super entertaining so I thought I would share it with the rest of you out there just in case you miss her blog this week.  She had blogged about a condom commercial she found on Youtube. I completely agree with her on that any topic revolving around sex are usually uncomfortable, disapproving and inappropriate and may offend audiences. Durex has clearly identify this as a weakness for their products and has cleverly come up with a marketing commercial that is eye catching, more appropriate for viewers and that provides a comic relief. Ashley mentioned most condom commercials are hot and steamy, I would like to add confusing and indirect into that category. Condom companies tries not be so direct about what they selling in order to avoid offending any potential viewers and I’ve found it to be very ineffective because by the end of the commercial the viewer is left confused and uncertain about what the company is trying to pitch to them. Durex took a different approach and simply had their product (condoms) in view throughout the whole commercial but disguised it in a way that only older audiences (young adults – which happens to be their target market) may understand its context. I personally believe it’s a great commercial and it completely caught my attention because it was so different from the usual ones I have seen before. I can definately see how Durex’s marketing team consists of very creative people and hope to see more commercials as creative and attractive as theirs.

The Youtube video is worth watching, it is really cute and entertaining!

The things you own end up owning you

YouTube Preview Image

During Thanksgiving weekend I took the liberty to pop in my favorite movie of all time “Fight Club” and as I watched the film, I came across two scenes that linked towards marketing and consumerism. It is true what Brad Pitt says, we ARE ALL drones that simply purchase what we are told through media and advertising. We buy things we don’t need to fulfill our desires and wishes but in the end, none of it matters, none of it makes us any happier. It started with only food, water and shelter as the necessities of everyday life. Now, we all need designer label clothing, accessories, sports cars, technological devices (IPhone, Blackberry, MP3, PS3) and etc. I realize I may be a hypocrit for saying this, but why are we all giving in to the marketing scenes of most companies? Without the latest smartphone we’re not going to die, without the most expensive handbag we won’t starve, so why are all these items so important to us now? Partially I blame the millions of companies out there that love to advertise and convince consumers that they really NEED the items they are trying to sell. In some ways, these new inventions have made our lives easier, but at the same time, they’ve also made our lives more difficult. For the younger generations it’s all about the brands and the labels and nothing else matters. Everyone wants to get a hold of the latest newest fashion in clothing, technology and etc. Older generations focus on working day to night to make more money to spend on useless items that they believe will make their life more fulfilling and happier. We all become addicted. We continuously buy in hopes that the next item(s) will make a great difference in our lives and possibly create a meaning as to why we live.  Everything around us, everything we’re being forced to believe is not true. We are being targeted and brought up thinking as consumers, we end up becoming obsessed with purchases that we lose sight of what’s really important in our lives.

Real Beauty

I realize that his topic may be brought up and talked about a lot but I strongly feel that it is a topic that can be looked at more.

In our society today, the way ads and commericals portray both women and men are extremely disrespectful and demeaning. Our exposure to all the media around us has implanted in our minds this image of ‘what a beautiful women’ should appear like or ‘what a real man’ should look like. There are several ads out there that exploit both genders as you can see below. My questions are: Is this what we preceive all men and women should look like? Why is it that majority of men in society not appear as they do in the Calvin Klein ads then? If ordinary men do not replicate the models in Calvin Klein’s ads does that mean they are inferior? Are women supposed to be a size zero in order to be categorized as beautiful or pretty?

Our society's belief of a "Beautiful Women"     What "real men" look like

Although most people may not take great offence to these ads. I personally feel that they are subconsciously hurting us. Women wonder “if they are too fat to be liked” and men feel emasculated by not meeting the society’s standards of ‘a man.’ I don’t believe men have to be strong, buff or extremely fit to be attractive and manly. I don’t believe women have to be thin, tall, lean to be pretty. Why can’t there just be ads with “normal people” portrayed in it? How much percent of our population even looks like “the ideal man or woman”? We shouldn’t have to feel bad about ourselves just because some advertising company decided to project their views on what a woman or man should look like. We should be happy to be who we are in every aspect. This is why I believe Dove has been so successful in getting support for their campaign. They promote “real beauty” and being comfortable in your own skin. I recently came across a blogger and her opinions on the Dove campaign.

I completely agree with her on how Dove has been successful in reaching out to their target groups because they promote the real aspect of beauty. They don’t hire people that fits into the sterotype of “The perfect women” but rather base all their ads and commercials on everyday average people like you and I. The ad doesn’t suggest what women should LOOK LIKE to be beautiful but rather delivers the message that everyone is beautiful and unique in their own way and that we should all be proud of we are. The message I get from Dove is so much more positive than the ones I get from everyday ads I see in magazines or on television. It’s a tough adjustment for our society and it’s even harder for everyone to change their way of thinking. It may take hundreds of years before we can all come to a realization that we are all different and beautiful in our own ways and that there are many defintions of beauty, not just one. Maybe, just maybe I’ll live to see that day.

IBerry

So there is this on going war in the mobile world between the IPhone and Blackberry and the question today still stands,  which one is better?

Now this question cannot be easily answered because if it could be, average consumers like both you and I will not have to think, ponder and make such a hard choice when the time has finally come to switch out of our ghetto brick cell phones and into a cool looking, popular smart phone.

I recently took the liberty of conducting a friendly survey on which phone would an average person find more useful. Of course, the survey did not go so well as Blackberry users clearly voted for the Blackberry with their ultimate reasoning being BBM (Blackberry Messenger) because it provides the gateway to social networking instantly anywhere and anytime. Asides from that, the typical argument as to why Blackberry is better would be that it consists of an actual keyboard which some consumers find more convenient when it comes to typing. Now, let us have a look at the IPhone, another amazing prototype in our world today. Many IPhone users argue that the phone is simply better because it functions as a mini computer. It is able to do practically anything your computer is able to do which I believe was the essential idea Apple wanted to promote and market. However, IPhone will never be able to overtake Blackberry because it does not have and application such as BBM, although has tried to copy it with similar apps.

So in the end no one wins. There is technically no right answer as to which smart phone of the two is better. My question now is why they are still competing with each other? It is evident that IPhone and Blackberry are one of the top selling smart phones in the world today and the market in which they compete in is extremely competitive. However, because they are more favorable and have the advantage of being a smart phone they are placed above the competitive market of mobile phones and put into an oligopoly competing only against other smart phone brands. This is now the point where I wonder why doesn’t the IPhone and Blackberry come together to create the ultimate IBerryand turn the market into a monopolistic one. The IBerry will feature the IPhone ‘s handy miniature computer concept with Blackberry’s sustainable competitive advantage of BBM. The world will go nuts over the this collaboration and the IBerry will be truly the best smart phone anyone can find out there.

Just picture a world without the smart phone war, the hard decisions that may impact your life in ways you cannot imagine and the ability to have the best of both phones. Wouldn’t that be something else?
