Western Demand and Chinese Suffering

“Chinese workers are not forced into factories because of our insatiable desire for iPods. They choose to leave their homes in order to earn money, to learn new skills and to see the world.”

the Speaker

It is a debatable phenomenon that more and more Chinese young people choose to leave their home villages so as to find a job in factories, which usually located in big cities. Moreover, it is also interesting to know that during Spring Festival (as equivalent to Western Christmas), there is the greatest migration in the world as the Chinese factory workers can only be united with their family during the short break throughout a year. In spite of the fact that China’s economy is booming, Chinese young workers continue to suffer from low living standards, poor medical care, and extreme social pressure. Chinese workers are only told to do one thing and keep repeating, just like McDonald’s workers do. In that way, the company can pay them low wages and replace them easily. Therefore, the young Chinese never have opportunities to learn or develop new skills.

It is easy for us to buy and enjoy Apple electronics, but it seldom occurs to us that, as the customers, we may exploit Chinese workers’ benefits.
