Hello everyone, here is my outline of the course description as well as some comments about my expectations of it.
English 301 is a distance education course taught by Dr. Erika Paterson. It prepares students in the study of written and online communication for business and professional contexts. Students are expected to engage with their classmates in online discussion, peer review, and the production and analysis of documents produced for business, professional, and technical contexts. This class fosters discussion of and practice in the preparation of abstracts, proposals, applications, reports, correspondence and online communications. Through the development of writing skills and practical assignments, and through interactions with peers and the instructor this course seeks to prepare students for communication in a professional setting.
The course is divided up into four units:
- Principles, Practices and People in English 301
- Designing a Report Proposal; Defining Terms with Audience in Mind
- Designing a Report Outline & Draft; Building your Resume and Job Application skills
- Drafting the Formal Report; Peer Review and Final Report; developing networking strategies
Course Expectations:
As I am currently looking for a tech job in the industry, I am very excited for the opportunity for developing my resume and professional social media sites like my LinkedIn account. These projects have direct application to my current job search and I expect this course to help me communicate effectively in my job applications. I am also very excited to be working with my classmates as I hope to gain some helpful feedback in creating my online profile. Furthermore, when I do finally get a tech job (hopefully!) I expect this class will help to improve my communication skills with my managers and co-workers. As clear communication within tech careers is particularly important I look forward to this job allowing me to function well within such environments. I’m looking to a great class!
