Course Background

The stories shared here arose from SCAN 332A, Heroes in Nordic Literature and Film, taught by Dr. Kyle Frackman in spring 2014 (W2013, term 2) in the Department of Central, Eastern and Northern European Studies. An iteration of SCAN 332, Topics in Scandinavian Studies, the course followed heroic and anti-heroic figures in literature and film of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Examples of the works include Grettir’s Saga, Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen,” Troll Hunter, and the Kalevala.

The course is part of the Scandinavian Studies program at UBC, which offers students an undergraduate minor.
